Tuesday marked the last day of the fall semester and officials said the current threat caused by the spike \u201chas been mitigated,\u201d as most students are either preparing to leave or have already left campus.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\">\n<p class=\"font-copy font--article-body gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md\" data-el=\"text\">\u201cRight now, we\u2019re on the side of strongly recommending people get a booster,\u201d Hugh Mighty, senior vice president of health affairs and dean of Howard\u2019s medical school, said in an interview. But, he added, that guidance could change. \u201cAs the data comes in and as we follow what\u2019s going on, then that will inform what we will do next.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\">\n<p class=\"font-copy font--article-body gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md\" data-el=\"text\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\">\n<p class=\"font-copy font--article-body gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md\" data-el=\"text\">Officials at the University of Virginia say they are also keeping an eye on data.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\">\n<p class=\"font-copy font--article-body gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md\" data-el=\"text\">\u201cAt this time, scientists here at U-Va. and around the world simply don\u2019t have enough data about this new variant to make informed decisions about how to respond to it,\u201d wrote Liz Magill, the University of Virginia\u2019s provost, and J.J. Davis, the university\u2019s chief operating officer, in a recent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirus.virginia.edu\/updates\/omicron-evaluation-spring-semester-encouraging-boosters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">message<\/a>\u00a0to the campus.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\">\n<p class=\"font-copy font--article-body gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md\" data-el=\"text\">The university is keeping its mask mandate in place, which requires individuals regardless of vaccination status to cover their faces in most indoor settings. But the way the virus evolves in the coming weeks \u2014 and especially over the holiday break \u2014 will determine how the campus moves forward, officials said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\">\n<p class=\"font-copy font--article-body gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md\" data-el=\"text\">A year ago, the emergence of a new coronavirus variant could have leveled a campus. The first year of the pandemic was marked by case surges and school closures.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\">\n<p class=\"font-copy font--article-body gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md\" data-el=\"text\">But, with the protection offered by vaccines, the coronavirus is more manageable, officials say. More than 1,100 campuses throughout the country require students or employees to be vaccinated, according to the Chronicle of Higher Education, and many schools continue to enforce mask usage indoors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\">\n<p class=\"font-copy font--article-body gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md\" data-el=\"text\">\u201cYou should be respectful of the virus,\u201d Mighty said. \u201cWe should not panic around the virus.
