A High Court judge Monday sentenced a 25-year-old mother to 98 years in jail after she was found guilty of killing her two children by giving them rat poison in 2014.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Awena Rutherford, appeared before Justice Navindra Singh for sentencing after she had been found guilty last month.<\/p>\n

Unlike, last month, when she broke down in tears after the guilty verdict was announced, Rutherford remained calm as the judge announced the jail term.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

The court heard that on March 27, 2014, Rutherford instructed her two young children, one-year-old Jabari Cadogan and four-year-old Odascia Cadogan, to ingest the rat poison tablets. Rutherford had said that she had drunk two tablets herself.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

The children followed their mother\u2019s command and became ill almost immediately. They were rushed to the hospital but died while receiving treatment.<\/p>\n

In court, the woman had argued that she was not aware that the tablets were rat poison and were given to the children who had a cold.<\/p>

But the jury found her guilty on the two counts of manslaughter.<\/p>\n
