Prison Superintendent, Albert Wade says work is to begin next week to refurbish the century-old kitchen at Her Majesty\u2019s Prison.<\/span><\/p>

The Prison Boss told state media the kitchen at the almost 300-year-old facility has begun to crumble.<\/span><\/p>\n

He said plans to build a new kitchen in the prison did not come to fruition after renovation work, which started in 2015 came to a standstill.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Wade said: \u201cover months now, the concrete is deteriorating even further, so much so, that the concrete that lines the roof of the kitchen itself started to break apart and fall about 2 to 3 weeks ago.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another part of the roof also reportedly collapsed\u00a0on Monday<\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Planned renovations at the prison include the construction of new cells and guard towers and refurbishment of bathroom facilities.<\/span><\/p>

Meantime, Wade believes 250 cells will be ideal for a new jail to hold convicted prisoners in Antigua & Barbuda.<\/span><\/p>\n

The government said it is in the negotiation stages to construct such as prison since Her Majesty\u2019s Prison is currently filled well beyond its intended capacity.<\/span><\/p>

Wade said since he has been and the prison in the last three years \u201cwe\u2019ve reached very close to 230 sentenced inmates and so my guess would be a capacity of about 250\u201d<\/span><\/p>

He said if needs be two inmates could share a cell.<\/span><\/p>\n

The plan is to convert HMP into a remand center once the new prison is constructed.<\/span><\/p>\n
