POINTE XPRESS: OUR mandates do not call for the termination of anyone,\u201d Prime Minister Gaston Browne declared as he poured scorn on UPP leader Harold Lovell\u2019s election-style promise to reinstate and compensate all who supposedly lost their jobs as a result of Government\u2019s mandatory vaccination policy for public sector workers \u2013 should his (Lovell\u2019s) party regain office.<\/p>

Calling the vaccine mandate \u201can unjust policy\u201d, Lovell said a future UPP administration would put in place the legal framework for public servants to claim and be compensated for wrongful dismissal, in addition to all who were still eligible being allowed to return to work if they had been forced to stay home as a consequence of refusing to get vaccinated.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe public sector has not terminated a single worker to date,\u201d PM Browne stressed. \u201cAll we have said is that we have an obligation to keep the work environment safe, and on that basis, individuals have to be vaccinated in order to enter the work premises. Very simple. There is no law, there is no regulation that calls for the dismissal of public sector workers.\u201d<\/p>

Elaborating on what obtains in the private sector, the Prime Minister stated: \u201cEven though we\u2019re saying that private sector workers are also mandated to get vaccinated in order to show that there is a safe work space or to keep the work spaces safe, then clearly the issue of dismissal again does not arise.\u201d<\/p>

The head of government believes this is another instance of Lovell and his UPP \u201cseeking to encourage people to stay unvaccinated and perhaps to stay unemployed for a period of 16 months \u2013 the next elections are constitutionally due in March of 2023, so maybe 17 months \u2013 or, if you add the additional three months that ordinarily a government could get depending on the prevailing circumstances, that\u2019s 20 months.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe is urging them to remain unemployed up to a period of about 20 months; and he is giving them the assurance that if they take that type of irresponsible position \u2026 they will be rewarded by a UPP administration \u2026 Isn\u2019t that amazing, that level of deceit?\u201d<\/p>

The Prime Minister denounced this stance by Lovell and the UPP as \u201cirresponsible and opportunistic behavior in which he and his colleagues, up to now, cannot bring themselves to encourage people to get vaccinated\u201d.<\/p>\n

He said the UPP and its leader were instead \u201ctrying to entrench and reward irresponsible behaviors \u2026”<\/p>
