President Iv\u00e1n Duque hailed Otoniel\u2019s capture in a televised video message.<\/p>

\u201cThis is the biggest blow against drug trafficking in our country this century,\u201d he said. \u201cThis blow is only comparable to the fall of Pablo Escobar in the 1990s.\u201d<\/p>\n

How was he caught?<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n
\n
\n

Otoniel was captured in his rural hideout in Antioquia province in north-western Colombia, close to the border with Panama.<\/p>\n

\n

The operation involved 500 soldiers supported by 22 helicopters. One police officer was killed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n
\n

Otoniel had used a network of rural safe houses to move around and evade the authorities, and did not use a phone, instead relying on couriers for communication.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n

But his location at the time of his capture was pinpointed two weeks ago, El Tiempo newspaper said.<\/p>\n

\n

Police chief Jorge Vargas said his movements were traced by more than 50 signal intelligence experts using satellite imagery. US and UK agencies were involved in the search.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Mr Duque, quoted by AFP news agency, described the operation as \u201cthe biggest penetration of the jungle ever seen in the military history of our country\u201d.<\/p>\n

Colombia\u2019s armed forces later released a photo showing its soldiers guarding Otoniel, who was in handcuffs and wearing rubber boots.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

There have been several huge operations involving thousands of officers to capture the 50-year-old in recent years, but until now none have been successful.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n

How powerful is the Gulf Clan?<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Otoniel become the head of the Gulf Clan, previously known as the Usuga Clan, after its previous leader \u2013 his brother \u2013 was killed by police in a raid on a New Year\u2019s Eve party almost 10 years ago.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Colombia\u2019s security forces labelled the gang as the country\u2019s most powerful criminal organisation, while authorities in the US describe it as \u201cheavily armed [and] extremely violent\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The gang, which operates in many provinces and has extensive international connections, is engaged in drug and people smuggling, illegal gold mining and extortion.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

It is believed to have about 1,800 armed members, who are mainly recruited from far-right paramilitary groups. Members have been arrested in Argentina, Brazil, Honduras, Peru and Spain.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The gang controls many of the routes used to smuggle drugs from Colombia to the US, and as far away as Russia.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The Colombian government, however, believes it has decimated its numbers in recent years, forcing many leading members to hide in remote regions in the jungle.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Otoniel now faces a number of charges, including sending shipments of cocaine to the US, killing police officers and recruiting children.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
