The Government of Antigua and Barbuda, led by the Ministry of Health, Wellness, and the Environment,\u00a0 is preparing to actively participate in the 26th United Nations’ climate change conference (known as COP 26) scheduled for 31st October – 12th November in Glasgow, United Kingdom.<\/p>

Antigua and Barbuda’s delegation to the premier international climate change conference will be led by Prime Minister the Honourable Gaston Browne and accompanied by the Honourable Sir Molwyn Joseph, Minister of Health, Wellness and the Environment, and Her Excellency Ambassador Diann Black-Layne, Director of the Department of Environment and Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s Climate Ambassador.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

His Excellency Ambassador Aubrey Webson (Permanent Representative to the United Nations) will be leading the\u00a0section of the delegation that forms the\u00a0Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) Chair’s team.<\/p>

 <\/p>\n

The Honourable Dean Jonas, Minister with responsibility for the Blue Economy, will also be attending COP 26 along with a delegation from the University of the West Indies, Five Islands Campus.<\/p>

 <\/p>\n

This will be the first COP with Antigua and Barbuda as Chair of AOSIS. AOSIS is a coalition that represents the interests of the 39 small island developing states such as Antigua and Barbuda in international climate change negotiations.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

The country has been working hard to prepare all members of AOSIS for this important event. That said, the national needs and priorities of Antigua and Barbuda will also be addressed by the national delegation.\u00a0The national delegation will consist of staff from the Department of Environment,\u00a0Ministry of Finance, and\u00a0Office of the Attorney General.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

As Minister with responsibility for the Environment and focal Minister for climate change, the Hon. Sir Molwyn Joseph is pleased to report that further to Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s commitment to youth and gender-balanced representation at international climate change conferences such as the COP\u2019s, that the national delegation consists of over 60% individuals under the age of 30, and over 70% of the delegates are women.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Ministry is also working hard to ensure greater gender balance between male and female participation in its national and international work. One of the first steps to meet these commitments \u00a0includes the Apprenticeship Programme which is currently being run by the Department of Environment.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Ministerof Environment is therefore confident that the team will make the country proud, and looks forward to a positive outcome\u00a0at COP26\u00a0that will\u00a0strengthen the global response to climate change\u00a0for the benefit of both the people of AOSIS as well as Antigua and Barbuda.<\/p>\n
