The show\u2019s actors have shot to international fame \u2013 Jung Ho-yeon, who plays Sae-byeok, has gained 14 million Instagram followers since it launched on 17 September,\u00a0Forbes says<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

So what\u2019s the secret to the drama\u2019s success?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Why is Squid Game so popular?<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Similar in some ways to The Hunger Games, or the 2000 movie Battle Royale, the show focuses on a group of people in South Korea desperately in debt. <\/p>\n

They\u2019re first tricked (then volunteer) into playing a deadly tournament of children\u2019s games, realising this may be their only chance to win the money they need to survive.<\/p>\n

Chloe Henry is a fan of Korean shows and says Squid Game stands out from the others.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not something that\u2019s been done before,\u201d the 26-year-old from Sheffield tells Radio 1 Newsbeat.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith other shows, you can guess what\u2019s going to happen whereas this one is more \u2018wow\u2019 \u2013 a shock that you weren\u2019t expecting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Korean influence has grown massively in the UK.<\/p>\n

People here Googled Korea-related topics in October more than ever before, according to Google Trends data, and last month the Oxford English Dictionary added 26 new words of Korean origin to its latest edition to ride \u201cthe crest of the Korean wave\u201d.<\/p>\n

As in the Oscar-winning Korean film, Parasite, the hardship seen in Squid Game is what makes it appealing to an international audience, says Dr Hye-Kyung Lee \u2013 who\u2019s researching the rise of K-drama and K-pop at King\u2019s College London.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese dramas or films are entertaining, and they have something unique which can strike a chord with people around the world.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey present a critique of society and social economic conditions, which people can relate to through the characters.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr Lee says other Korean dramas do touch on issues of society, economy and politics, but Squid Game has been far more direct in its approach.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s serious, the message is extreme and I think that reflects what\u2019s happening right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s something Chloe agrees with.<\/p>\n

\u201cOther Korean shows can be quite modest, they don\u2019t show blood, nudity and they blur out weapons.<\/p>\n
