Health officials told the Cabinet that many children in Antigua & Barbuda had contracted the coronavirus.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s according to Cabinet Spokesman Melford Nicholas, who said this was one of the reasons that the government suspended face-to-face classes at primary schools.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

\u201cComing from the CMO\u2019s office and from the Ministry of Health that there have been a number of incidents where children below the age of 18, up until the time we look at it yesterday, that number was close to 100, who have been affected by COVID\u201d, Nicholas revealed at the Cabinet media briefing on Thursday.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

\u201cWe also knew that we cannot vaccinate, up until now there has been no approved vaccines for application for children below the age of 12 and so accordingly, we had to take a look at the risk involved of having face-to-face learning resume in the schools at the primary level where the majority of the students would below the age of twelve,\u201d Nicholas said.<\/p>\n

He said the government did not want to take the \u201cunacceptably high\u201d risk.<\/p>

\u201cWe understand the hardship, the operational hardship and perhaps even economic hardship that are being visited on parents, but it certainly is going to be, ultimately a lesser cost for them to pay than to have their children become ill in an environment and perhaps, you know, in certain circumstances, based on if they have any other health conditions, may lead to the loss of one of these children, tender little children,\u201d Nicholas insisted.<\/p>\n
