Eleven\u00a0previously displaced\u00a0families\u00a0were all smiles today as they\u00a0were presented with\u00a0keys to their\u00a0newly\u00a0renovated homes,\u00a0by\u00a0Prime Minister\u00a0Hon. Gaston Browne\u00a0and Vice President of EU Commission\u00a0Mr. Frans Timmermans. The handover ceremony was a segment of the high-level visit to Antigua and Barbuda, of the\u00a0Delegation of the European Union to Barbados, the Eastern Caribbean\u00a0Countries, the OECS and CARICOM\/CARIFORUM.\u00a0The 11 homes are a part of\u00a0the\u00a084 to be provided in the final stage of the \u20ac5 million-euro project to repair and rebuild homes that were either destroyed or severely damaged during the passage of Hurricane Irma, under Phase 2 of the EU Housing Support to Barbuda Project.<\/p>

Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Hon. Gaston Browne noted \u201cI am very happy with the progress that has been made during the last 12-18 months. Barbuda, obviously, has made a lot of progress. Eighty percent (80%) of the homes have been restored and the PLH Project is going well. We have this energy plant as well in which 14 hours of the day have been supplied with green energy.\u00a0So\u00a0a lot of progress has been made and the future of Barbuda is very bright.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking on\u00a0the\u00a0behalf of the European Union\u00a0Mr. Frans Timmermans, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission,\u00a0noted\u00a0\u201cI’m really excited to be here today to see the marvelous work done by the UNDP with support from the European Union. If you can help so many people with such limited funds to restore their house and create high-level housing, that’s marvelous! I admire what UNDP does worldwide but here, they have done an excellent job and I want to commend the people of UNDP for that.\u201d<\/p>

Gloria Cephas, a mother of 8,\u00a0who\u00a0like the 10\u00a0additional\u00a0beneficiaries, was\u00a0devastated after losing her home to the hurricane expressed her gratitude to the Government, the EU and UNDP stating\u00a0\u201cGetting back my home today was the best relief I have had in the last four years \u2013 we can actually go back home. The house that we have been waiting for is finally ready and it is a relief. Without the housing project, we would not have been able to rebuild any time soon, so we are more than grateful and very thankful.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Construction of the 11 homes began in July 2021, with\u00a0another\u00a0cluster\u00a0of homes slated to be completed by the beginning of November, using the \u201cBuild Back Better\u201d (BBB) approach, in compliance with the 2015 OECS Building Code, as well as the Antigua and Barbuda Building Guidelines.\u00a0The Project, led by the Government of Antigua and Barbuda with support from the European Union (EU) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean\u00a0runs until 2022. The\u00a0Office of the National\u00a0Authorising\u00a0Officer\u00a0(ONAO),\u00a0with the\u00a0assistance\u00a0of the Beneficiary Selection Committee\u00a0(BSC),\u00a0will continue the selection process to repair the most impacted homes, overall totalling 104 homes.<\/p>\n

Ugo Blanco, Deputy Resident Representative for UNDP Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean\u00a0reiterated UNDP\u2019s commitment to\u00a0governments\u00a0in the region as they build forward better, improve resilience and accelerate progress towards the achievement of the SDGs noting \u201cSustainable inclusive development\u00a0reaches all aspects of society and ensures no one is left behind. Thus, projects and partnerships\u00a0such as\u00a0these\u00a0are catalytic as they\u00a0address poverty, inequality and exclusion while creating an enabling environment for local and national growth\u201d<\/p>

It is\u202fimperative\u202fthat\u00a0efforts\u202ftowards\u00a0regional resilience and building forward better\u00a0are\u00a0advanced, as\u202fhazards and\u00a0threats like COVID-19\u00a0continue to\u00a0impact\u00a0the region.\u00a0As the Caribbean seeks innovative solutions to build resilience and ensure livelihoods for traditionally\u00a0vulnerable groups,\u202fUNDP\u00a0Barbados\u00a0and the Eastern Caribbean,\u202fin\u202fpartnership with governments\u202fand stakeholders,\u202fremains dedicated\u202fto\u202fthe advancement of inclusive and\u202fsustainable development throughout the\u202fregion\u202fand\u202fbuilding resilient communities that can withstand shocks and crises\u202fthrough targeted projects and\u202fprogrammes.<\/p>\n
