Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) Director Carissa F. Etienne said today that COVID-19 has severely impacted the mental and physical health of children and adolescents in the Americas. She urged countries to take several specific measures to protect them, including safe reopening of schools.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Dr. Etienne said over 1.5 million cases were reported in the region last year, while more than 1.9 million have already been reported in the first nine months of this year. While children and young people generally experience mild or no symptoms, they can also develop severe illness.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs more adults receive their COVID-19 vaccines, children \u2013 who are not yet eligible for vaccinations\u00a0in most countries\u00a0\u2013 are representing a larger percentage of COVID hospitalizations and even deaths,\u201d Dr. Etienne said in a media briefing. \u201cSo,\u00a0let\u2019s be clear: children and young people\u00a0also\u00a0face a significant risk\u00a0of disease\u00a0from COVID-19.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

But, in addition, an array of secondary impacts are hitting children and adolescents particularly hard, the PAHO Director detailed. \u201cThe virus indirectly has consequences and is hindering their growth\u00a0and\u00a0development,\u00a0and\u00a0jeopardizing their chances at a bright future,\u201d she warned.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Dr. Etienne emphasized the negative impact of not attending school in person. \u201cWith each day that children go without in-person schooling, the higher the likelihood\u00a0that they drop out and never return to school,\u201d she said. \u201cFor some of the most vulnerable children\u00a0\u2013 particularly for our girls \u2013\u00a0this\u00a0can have lasting consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cExperts agree that\u00a0the pandemic\u00a0has triggered the worst educational crisis we have ever seen in the region,\u201d Dr. Etienne continued. She urged countries to focus on restoring health,\u00a0education, and social\u00a0services for school-age populations.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Children and adolescents are also missing annual check-ups and routine vaccinations due to widespread disruptions to health systems. \u201cHalf of young people have experienced increased stress or anxiety during the pandemic, yet mental health services and support remain out of reach for many,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Sexual and reproductive health services have been disrupted in more than half of countries in the region, and lockdowns and economic disruptions have increased the risk of\u00a0domestic\u00a0violence that can make home unsafe for children and adolescents.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

To reduce negative impacts on young people, countries should do \u201ceverything they can to safely reopen schools,\u201d Dr. Etienne advised. \u00a0Noting that \u201cthere is no zero-risk scenario,\u201d she said national and local authorities should decide when to open or close schools, depending on local\u00a0epidemiological conditions and\u00a0capacity to\u00a0respond. PAHO has developed detailed guidelines for safe reopening, including ensuring proper ventilation and sanitary conditions.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Children and adolescents should practice the proven public health measures: physical\u00a0distancing,\u00a0washing hands often,\u00a0wearing masks in public, and avoiding crowded places.\u00a0And they should also get tested if they develop symptoms or suspect they\u2019re sick.<\/p>\n

And countries should develop communications campaigns tailored for children and adolescents to ensure that they understand their risk of infection and ability to transmit COVID-19. \u201cToo many children and young people still don\u2019t think they\u2019re at risk,\u201d\u00a0Dr. Etienne said.<\/p>\n

Turning to her epidemiological update, Dr. Etienne reported that infections have increased by 20 percent in the Americas in the past week even as they are declining or plateauing in many other parts of the world. Cases have risen by a third in North America due\u00a0to increases in the U.S. and Canada. The U.S. is reporting more than 100,000 new daily infections for the first time since January.<\/p>\n

Infections are rising in Costa Rica, Guatemala and Belize,\u00a0and many\u00a0hospitals are \u201ccompletely saturated\u201d with COVID-19 patients, Dr. Etienne said.<\/p>\n

Infections generally have slowed in the Caribbean. However, Grenada, Barbados and Bermuda are reporting sharp increases, and Jamaica experienced its highest weekly infections since the beginning of the pandemic.\u00a0Meanwhile, most South American countries continue to report declines in infections and deaths.<\/p>\n

In total, 1.4 million cases and 23,300 COVID-related deaths were reported in the Americas in the past week.<\/p>\n
