A child under the age of 10, who Waterloo Region\u2019s medical officer of health said had underlying health conditions, has died due to COVID-19.<\/p>

Dr. Hsiu-Li Wang confirmed the child\u2019s death at the region\u2019s weekly COVID-19 briefing on Friday morning.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe child had underlying health conditions,\u201d Wang said. \u201cThere were no school-related or childcare-related exposures in this case.\u201d<\/p>

Wang said she is not aware of a younger death reported in Ontario to date, and said this is the first death in the under 10 age group in Waterloo Region. However, she didn\u2019t provide any further specifics about the age of the child who died.<\/p>

She said this is a \u201crare, tragic circumstance\u201d that serves as a \u201cdevastating reminder of the serious nature of this virus.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a heartbreaking loss and I wish to express my deepest sympathy and condolences to the family and loved ones,\u201d Wang added.<\/p>

Premier Doug Ford tweeted about the death, saying it is \u201cabsolutely gut-wrenching.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy prayers are with the family at this excruciatingly difficult time,\u201d his tweet said. \u201cThis virus know no bounds. It\u2019s why we need every eligible Ontarian to get vaccinated \u2014 to protect ourselves, our loved ones, and those who can\u2019t yet get vaccinated against COVID-19.\u201d<\/p>
