BBC-A powerful earthquake has struck the Pacific coast of Mexico, close to the resort of Acapulco.<\/b><\/p>

The magnitude-seven quake was also felt strongly around 370km (230 miles) away in Mexico City, sending residents and tourists spilling into the streets from homes and hotels.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Power cuts were reported in several states and there was damage as the quake shook hillsides around Acapulco.<\/p>

One man was killed by a falling post in the nearby city of Coyuca de Ben\u00edtez.<\/p>

Utility poles fell on vehicles in Acapulco and part of a church collapsed, the AFP news agency reported.<\/p>

Acapulco Mayor Adela Rom\u00e1n said that the quake sparked “nervous breakdowns” in the city.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

She added that “a lot of gas leaks” had been detected in residential areas.<\/p>
