AP-Jean Paul Belmondo, one of the most iconic French actors of the 20th Century and a leading face of the French New Wave, has died at the age of 88.<\/p>

The actor\u2019s agent confirmed the news to the AFP news agency. French press reported he died peacefully at his home in Paris.<\/p>\n

Belmondo began acting in the theater in the 1950s before breaking into film later that decade. His first collaboration with Jean-Luc Godard came in the 1958 short\u00a0Charlotte And Her Boyfriend<\/em>. Shortly after, while having success on stage, he began to be offered lead roles in film, appearing in the 1960 gangster movie\u00a0Consider All Risks<\/em>\u00a0with Lino Venture.<\/p>

His next lead role was in Godard\u2019s debut feature\u00a0Breathless<\/em>, which cemented the actor\u2019s position as a leading man of the French New Wave movement. Starring Belmondo as a wandering criminal named Michel, the film was an instant hit, and has had an enduring legacy as a seminal entry in European cinema.<\/p>

The 1960s saw Belmondo take on varied film roles in a mixture of genres, also making his mark on Italian cinema with parts opposite Sophia Loren (1961\u2019s\u00a0Two Women<\/em>) and Claudia Cardinale (1961\u2019s\u00a0The Lovemakers<\/em>).<\/p>\n

He reunited with Godard for the 1961 musical romantic comedy\u00a0A Woman Is a Woman,<\/em>\u00a0before teaming with Jean-Pierre Melville for\u00a0L\u00e9on Morin, Priest, The Fingerman\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Manget Of Doom<\/em>. Belmondo\u2019s films continued to regularly be both commercial as well as artistic successes, with the actor dominating the box office throughout the 1960s, particularly with his action pics such as\u00a0That Man from Rio.<\/em><\/p>

Declining offers to act in Hollywood, Belmondo began producing in the 1970s, forming his own banner Cerito Films. Credits included Claude Chabrol\u2019s\u00a0Dr. Popaul,<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Animal<\/em>\u00a0opposite Raquel Welch. He continued to produce action films and was a strong advocate of genre cinema, defending his films from what he perceived to be snobbery. \u201cSuccess in France is always looked down on, not by the public, but by intellectuals. If I\u2019m nude in a film, that\u2019s fine for the intellectuals. But if I jump from a helicopter, they think it\u2019s terrible,\u201d he was quoted as saying.<\/p>\n

Belmondo was married twice and is survived by three children.<\/p>
