The Wally Browne Farm- a family tradition<\/p>\n

Enroute to Bethesda village, the Wally Browne Farm spans on fifty-five
\n(55) acres of land.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>
\"\"<\/div>\n

This generational business is presently under the stewardship of Mr.
\nGeno Browne for the past twelve 12 years.
\nFarming was then and still is now in his family for four generations.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Although he held other jobs, Browne admits that he has been on the
\nfarm for basically all his life.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have been around farming my entire life, it’s a part of my family and
\nfor three or four generations, we have been operating farms in and
\naround this area” Browne said.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Throughout the years, this farm has been one of the local suppliers of
\nproduce such as sweet potatoes, pumpkins, sweet corns, cucumbers,
\nwater melons and pumpkins.<\/p>\n

Presently grown on this farm are cucurbits (cantaloupes, cucumbers,
\nwater melons, pumpkins) and sweet corn.
\nWhile there, it was observed that some areas of the land were not in
\nuse and we were told that planting has been scaled down mainly
\nbecause of water availability and quality.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

“There are some areas where we have to rest and hold especially now
\nwith limited \u201chydration\u201d, we definitely have to scale down to be able to
\nproduce other items\u201d Browne said.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Another major issue that is being experienced for years according to
\nBrowne is that of roaming animals, especially donkeys.
\nOver the years, these equines caused tremendous damage to property,
\ninfrastructure and crops.<\/p>\n

Loss of crops meant loss of revenue and destruction of property meant
\nmore spending either to repair or replace these items.<\/p>\n

Despite these hurdles, the farm is a striving entity which has a lot of
\npotential.<\/p>\n

When asked about their future plans, we were told that seeking other
\nmarkets, a storage\/packaging facility and trying other crops and fruits
\nsuch as pomegranate and to propagate at least 1200 coconut trees, are
\namong Mr. Browne’s priorities.<\/p>\n

“We are on a major coconut seedling drive and now have over 300
\nseedlings and our goal is 1200 trees. One has to agree that if it is only
\none positive this COVID-19 Pandemic has brought to us is that of \u201cFood
\nSecurity”.<\/p>\n
