Tributes have been pouring into the Antigua and Barbuda Permanent Mission to the United Nations after a book of condolences was opened last week following the passing of national hero and former Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, His Excellency, Sir Lester Bryant Bird.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/u>\u00a0<\/u><\/span><\/p>

Members of the diplomatic community came across in a steady stream to the New York Offices to express their condolences and acknowledge Sir Lester\u2019s contribution to the advancement of the people of Antigua and Barbuda, the wider Caribbean and to the maintenance of peace and security across the globe.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/u>\u00a0<\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/u>\u00a0<\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

Following\u00a0Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s Independence in 1981, Sir Lester became the country\u2019s first Minister of Foreign Affairs\u00a0and\u00a0earned a reputation\u00a0as one of the finest orators of his time with\u00a0the sheer\u00a0eloquence\u00a0in the delivery of his speeches at the United Nations\u00a0and other regional and international fora.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/u>\u00a0<\/u><\/span><\/p>

His first address at the United Nations was delivered on 11<\/span>th<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0November 1981 when Antigua\u00a0and Barbuda\u00a0was\u00a0welcomed to the body of nations as its 157<\/span>th<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0member.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/u>\u00a0<\/u><\/span><\/p>

In paying tribute to his lasting legacy, Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador\u00a0Walton Aubrey\u00a0Webson, noted that his contribution to the twin island nation\u2019s development will be forever missed.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201cWe stand on his shoulders as we continue to build our nation. Sir Lester, Antigua and Barbuda, will be forever proud of you,\u201d\u00a0Ambassador\u00a0Webson\u00a0noted.\u00a0<\/u>\u00a0<\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSir Lester was an Antiguan patriot and a great contributor to regionalism. The Permanent Representative of Brazil to the United Nations His Excellency\u00a0Ronaldo Filho recalled Sir Lester\u2019s contribution to deepening the integration process.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cHis distinguished service as Chairman of the\u00a0Organization\u00a0of Eastern Caribbean States is further testimony of his lifelong commitment to peace and regional integration,\u201d Ambassador Filho\u00a0remarked.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/u>\u00a0<\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

The Deputy Permanent Representative of Zimbabwe Her Excellency\u00a0Petronellar\u00a0Nyagura\u00a0said Sir Lester, Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s second Prime Minister, served \u201cwith\u00a0unparalleled\u00a0distinction.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/u>\u00a0<\/u><\/span><\/p>

Among the Antiguans and Barbudans who signed the book of condolences was Ms. Joycelyn K. Valentine, who recalled the pleasant times shared between her family and Sir Lester.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/u>\u00a0<\/u><\/span><\/p>

\u201cMay the fond memories of your beloved comfort you and give you peace,\u201d she wrote in the book which will be shared with the family.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/u>\u00a0<\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

Other members of the diplomatic corps that came by to express their condolences represented countries such as Suriname, Morocco, Syria, Nigeria, Kuwait, Ireland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sweden, Singapore, Indonesia and St. Lucia.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/u>\u00a0<\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/u>\u00a0<\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

Messages\u00a0were also received from the CARICOM Consular Corps, Switzerland, India, Madagascar, the State of Palestine, the Republic of the Philippines,\u00a0and a number of other countries.\u00a0United Nations Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres also expressed his condolences in a message to Antigua and Barbuda Prime Minister Gaston Browne.\u00a0<\/span><\/u>\u00a0<\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

The book of condolences will remain opened at the Permanent Mission until Wednesday August 25th. The invitation remains open for members of the Antigua and Barbuda diaspora to visit and sign.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/u>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
