Gaston Browne writing in the Book of Condolence, which was opened on Wednesday in the Office of the Prime Minister.<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>

Sir Lester Bryant Bird, KNH National Hero and former Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda died peacefully on August 9 following a brief illness.<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/u>\u00a0<\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

Also writing in the Book of Condolence was Attorney General, the Hon. Steadroy Benjamin, a former Cabinet colleague of Sir Lester Bird during his tenure as Prime Minister.\u00a0 Minister Benjamin wrote, \u201cA true politician and leader who laid the foundation for modern Antigua and Barbuda.\u00a0 A man who had a positive impact on my personal development and taught me all of the intricacies in politics.\u00a0 His humility, love of and for the people is a shining example of the positive elements of his life that I seek to emulate.\u201d<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>

Sir Robin Yearwood, also a former Cabinet colleague of Sir Lester, wrote of the sadness felt on hearing of the passing of Sir Lester.\u00a0 \u201cIt was with sadness I received the news that my friend and former PM had died.\u00a0 Lester and I were personal friends.\u00a0 We chatted, laughed and enjoyed ourselves.\u00a0 His passing will bring sadness to our nation.\u00a0 Lester had made his contribution to nation building.\u00a0 He cared for his people and at times was considered a friend to all people.\u00a0 I will remember him for the rest of my life.\u201d<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>

Minister for Agriculture, the Hon. Samantha Marshall, whose father the Hon. Hugh Marshall served with Sir Lester, wrote that, \u201cSir Lester will continue to be the giant of a leader in the minds of many including me.\u00a0 You were an integral part of my Dad, and by extension our family\u2019s life.\u00a0 You were born to serve, to serve in sports, in law and in governance.\u00a0 Thank you Sir. Lester, your legacy will live on for many years to come.\u201d<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSir Lester Bird was undoubtedly the architect of modern Antigua and Barbuda.\u00a0 His vision for Antigua and Antiguans transcended several generations.\u00a0 Even more importantly, he was the consummate Caribbean man.\u00a0 His leadership in Caribbean politics encouraged our peoples to come together.\u00a0 So we mourn today \u2013 indeed for a long time \u2013 the loss of a true Caribbean icon,\u201d wrote Tourism Minister the Hon. Charles Fernandez.<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>

Sir Molwyn Joseph, who also served in Sir Lester Bird\u2019s Cabinet also wrote of his sadness and loss.\u00a0 \u201cThe death of Sir Lester our National Hero, is all a personal and professional feeling of losing a mentor and a motivator.\u00a0 Sir Lester was the one who paved the way for me to become a public servant and guided my political career.\u00a0 I view him as the foremost political figure in the economic transformation of Antigua and Barbuda.\u00a0 History will record his many contributions, chief of which are the development of the economy of Antigua and Barbuda and propelling Antigua to the highest international status.\u201d<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/u>\u00a0<\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThroughout history there are great men and women whose contribution to nation building and the development of a people is significant.\u00a0 The contribution of our late National Hero Sir Lester \u201cBrilliant\u201d Bryant Bird to the growth and development of Antigua and Barbuda has been nothing short of phenomenal.\u00a0 Your entry through the gates of Valhalla is assured.\u00a0 You will be missed.\u00a0 Rest well after a lifetime of service after a lifetime of service to your country,\u201d wrote Education Minister, the Hon. Daryll Matthew.<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>

The Book of Condolence was also signed by Governor General Sir Rodney Williams who served with Sir Lester and his father Sir Vere Bird Sr.\u00a0 Lady Williams also extended her sympathies to the family.<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>

\u201cSir Lester was our National Hero, Former PM, husband and father and a citizen with the interest of our nation at heart.\u00a0 Sir Lester lived a full life and his contribution to Antigua and Barbuda will long be remembered by all.\u00a0 We extend sincerest condolences to the Bird family,\u201d wrote Sir Rodney Williams.<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n
