The United Progressive (UPP) unequivocally condemns the indiscriminate tear-gassing of nationals and residents \u2013 on the streets and in several urban communities \u2013 by the Riot Squad of the Police Force on Sunday, August 8, 2021.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

The use of tear-gas against defenseless men, women and children was unwarranted, excessive, and a mockery of the Police\u2019s duty to be peace-keepers first \u2013 even in adverse situations, says Political Leader Harold Lovell.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

In the first instance, the Freedom Fighters for Antigua and Barbuda had invited residents to\u00a0gather<\/em>\u00a0in \u201cpeaceful and orderly\u201d fashion on Sunday, after permission to march was denied on Friday, August 6 \u2013 a mere two days before \u2013 effectively depriving them of the right of appeal.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

No march was undertaken on Sunday and, by all reports, there was, indeed, peace and order, as the group and its supporters exercised their\u00a0freedom of speech\u00a0<\/em>on a topical issue.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

At no time was the safety of the gathering compromised by disorderly behaviour, or breaches of the COVID-19 protocols, or threats against the Police.\u00a0 Therefore, the officers\u2019 use of such force \u2013 which, easily, could have turned deadly as persons ran, gasping, from the tear-gas \u2013 was uncalled for, Lovell says.<\/p>\n

The reported tear-gassing in the Rural West and Rural South communities \u2013 residential areas\u00a0not at all involved<\/em>\u00a0in the gathering \u2013 was nothing short of gratuitous violence against innocent people, many of them elderly or infants, or in poor health, Lovell adds.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

These actions provoked the unfortunate retaliation of some residents \u2013 bearing out the adage that \u201cviolence begets violence.\u201d<\/p>\n

Around the world and in our own Caribbean region, similar events \u2013 common to most democracies \u2013 were staged without violence being visited by the Police upon their citizens.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

Therefore, what happened \u00a0here on Sunday afternoon has damaged the confidence and trust that citizens should reasonably be able to repose in officers of the law.\u00a0 It has also severely damaged the cooperative relationship between the Force and the citizenry it is meant to serve.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Further, it has cemented in the minds of many the belief that the Police are merely tools of the current political directorate \u2013 which is unfortunate, as the Party knows there are many good and professional officers within the ranks.<\/p>\n

Finally, Lovell condemns the desperate attempts of the Antigua Labour Party and its mouthpieces to transpose the responsibility for Sunday\u2019s travesty to the United Progressive Party.<\/p>\n

Seeking permission for the aborted march and inviting residents to the gathering were the responsibility of the group that has identified itself as the Freedom Fighters for Antigua and Barbuda,\u00a0which is not affiliated with the UPP in any way.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>The UPP has no need to wear camouflage, the Leader states.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat the Labour Party is attempting to do \u2013 though in vain \u2013 is downplay the level of disaffection, disenchantment, and disgust it has engendered among the general population and even among persons who once counted themselves as supporters.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe people, however, clearly recognize and reject this tired and predictable ploy,\u201d Lovell notes.<\/p>\n

The UPP continues to support the constitutional rights of individuals to assemble and to speak freely, whether or not it agrees with their positions.\u00a0 \u201cThat is democracy,\u201d the Political Leader declares.<\/p>\n
