The main opposition United Progressive Party says it has received reports of election bribery.<\/div>\n

It says that according to reports, one political party is offering money to certain electors, to relinquish their voter identification cards, with a guarantee that the cards would be returned to them after the election.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“This illegal practice of paying electors to give up their voter identification card, is intended to ensure that these persons would be unable to vote in the upcoming election,” the UPP warned in a press release.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“Persons inclined to vote for the United Progressive Party have been targeted,” it adds.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The UPP Legal Team has characterized this action as “blatant bribery,” that is contrary to Section 29 (2)(a) (b) (c) and (d) of the Representation of the People (Amendment) Act 2001.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cThis is a corrupt practice under our elections law, but we are not in the least surprised, given the Labour party\u2019s history of corruption, voter manipulation and the current desperation of the ABLP,\u201d says Leon Chaku Symister legal advisor to the UPP.\u00a0 “It is our intention to take further steps to have law enforcement monitor these violators, with a view to bring them to justice\u201d Symister continued.<\/div>\n

The UPP wants any person found engaging in the practice of election bribery, to be prosecuted.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The UPP further condemns the alleged offering of loans to voters in St. John\u2019s Rural East and St. Mary\u2019s South to induce them to vote.\u00a0 It says the lending of money is also a crime under section 29 (3) of the Act.<\/div>\n
