Assassinated Haitian President Jovenel Mo\u00efse\u2018s body was found riddled with a dozen high-caliber bullets \u2014 with one of his eyes blown out, a local judge has said.<\/p>

\u201cWe found twelve holes in the president\u2019s body,\u201d P\u00e9tion-Ville deputy justice of the peace Carl Henry Destin told Haiti\u2019s largest newspaper, Le Nouvelliste, saying they were \u201cmade with a large caliber weapon.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe president\u2019s office and bedroom were ransacked. We found him lying on his back, blue pants, a white shirt smeared with blood, his mouth open, his left eye blown out,\u201d the judge told the French-language paper.<\/p>

\u201cWe saw a bullet impact at the level of his forehead, one in each nipple, three at the hip, one in the abdomen,\u201d the judge revealed.<\/p>

Despite Mo\u00efse having his own security detail \u2014 part of a specialized unit of the Haitian National Police \u2014 only the president and his wife, Martine Mo\u00efse, were shot during the hit squad\u2019s raid.<\/p>\n

The first lady was later flown to Miami, Florida, for surgery and is expected to survive.<\/p>

One of the couple\u2019s three children, daughter Jomarlie Jovenel Mo\u00efse, was home at the time, but hid from the assassins in her brother\u2019s bedroom, Destin told the local paper.<\/p>\n

The brother \u2014 who was not identified \u2014 was tied up alongside a maid, the judge said.<\/p>

As well as the bullets in the president\u2019s body, \u201cmany 5.56- and 7.62-mm cartridge cases were found between the gatehouse and the interior of the residence,\u201d Destin told the paper of the raid that was partially caught in video footage.<\/p>

Haiti\u2019s National Police late Wednesday said they had killed four of the suspected assailants and arrested two others \u2014 and were still engaged in a fierce gun battle that they expected to last through early Thursday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are chasing them so that either in the exchange of fire they will be killed or we will apprehend them,\u201d police chief Leon Charles said. \u201cWe will continue to hunt them down.\u201d<\/p>\n

Haiti\u2019s ambassador to Washington, Bocchit Edmond, said the killers were \u201cprofessional\u201d mercenaries disguised as US Drug Enforcement Administration agents.<\/p>\n

While Mo\u00efse\u2019s presidency had been hugely unpopular, sparking thousands to take to the streets in a series of violent protests, his assassination still stunned the troubled nation that called a two-week period of mourning.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe didn\u2019t expect it. This is another earthquake in Haiti,\u201d a mother of two who gave her name only as Bernadette told Agence France-Presse, referring to the deadly 2010 quake.<\/p>\n

His death has further destabilized the political climate, with two men claiming to be leading the country in his place while there is no parliament after it was dissolved last year.<\/p>\n

Many fear it could only further escalate the violence plaguing the poverty-stricken nation.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow much worse can hell get?\u201d Irwin Stotzky, a Haiti expert at the University of Miami, asked AFP.<\/p>\n

\u201cHaiti faces even more violence and death and failure as a democratic nation than ever before, which is hard to imagine given its recent and chaotic history,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
