Assassination details\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The Haitian prime minister\u00a0described the attack, which occurred about\u00a01\u00a0a.m.,\u00a0as “highly coordinated” by a “highly trained and heavily armed group” whose members spoke in English and Spanish.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mo\u00efse\u2019s wife, Martine, was injured and taken to a hospital for treatment, Joseph said. One of the president\u2019s children, who was at home during the attack has been taken to a secure location.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Joseph said\u00a0the national police force is in control of the situation now and\u00a0has taken\u00a0measures to ensure the continuity of government,\u00a0as well as\u00a0to\u00a0secure\u00a0the nation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Joseph\u00a0urged\u00a0the international community to investigate the murder.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“We also call on the international community to launch an investigation into the assassination and for the United Nations to hold a Security Council meeting on Haiti as soon as possible,”\u00a0he\u00a0said in a\u00a0statement\u00a0emailed to VOA.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On Capitol Hill,\u00a0House Foreign Affairs Committee\u00a0lead,\u00a0Texas\u00a0Republican Michael McCaul,\u00a0released a statement\u00a0condemning the killing and calling for a probe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI strongly condemn the assassination of Haitian president Jovenel Mo\u00efse and hope his wife who was injured in the attack recovers quickly. There must be a full investigation and appropriate accountability for his murder. <\/span><\/p>\n

United Nations\u00a0reaction\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

United Nations Security Council\u00a0president, French Ambassador Nicolas de Riviere, said the council was deeply shocked by the assassination.<\/span><\/p>\n

The council will meet privately Thursday morning to discuss developments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a critical moment. I think we all knew it was sensitive and difficult on the ground in Haiti,\u201d Ireland\u2019s ambassador Geraldine Byrne Nason told reporters. She said the council would discuss how it could support the people of Haiti.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think this is a dark hour for them, and we certainly want to be sure we can express our support for the people of Haiti,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n

The United Nations has about 1,200 staff in Haiti as part of its political mission there.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Recent uptick in violence\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Haiti has been experiencing political instability and division,\u00a0as well as a rise in gang violence.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Last week in Port-au-Prince, gang leader Jimmy Cherisier, who is known by the nickname Barbeque, took to the streets to protest Moise’s government, calling on him to resign.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cJovenel\u00a0[Moise]\u00a0must go!\u201d Cherisier told reporters during the protest. \u201cA new group of people needs to lead this country,\u00a0and we must sit together around a table, have a national dialogue so we can redefine this country.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
