The Project Implementation Management Unit (PIMU) has hosted what is being described as a successful face-to-face stakeholder consultation with all covid-19 protocols observed at the Antigua and Barbuda Port Authority (ABPA) on Monday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The interactive consultative process attracted representatives from the, ABPA, Antigua and Barbuda Transport Board and the Antigua and Barbuda Royal Police Force and truckers.<\/span><\/p>\n

The consultation looked at the design for major junctions with respect to Sir Sydney Walling Highway and Anchorage Road as part of Works associated with the Second Road Infrastructure Rehabilitation Project.\u00a0 The stakeholders had the opportunity to make suggestions for improvements based on the challenges that they experience as road users, law enforcement and the regulators of road maintenance.<\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/div>\n

Project Engineer (Ag.) Mr. Nigel Francis Jr., used a visual presentation to explain how the contracting firm, CO Williams Ltd. proposes to cater to the needs of heavy-duty vehicles and address concerns of road safety and effective traffic management throughout implementation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Mr. Francis also provided an overview of the proposed junctions design and the planned traffic management plans for two of the four project roads, Sir Sydney Walling Highway and Anchorage Road.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0He said, \u201cThe goal is to get feedback from various stakeholders, including the Truckers Association with a view of the need for improvement and recommendations for development taking into consideration the need to engineer road infrastructure solutions and design roads that ease congestion and prioritize safety.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

The consultation featured open discussions that emphasized the issues faced at major and minor junctions to include access, movement of large vehicles such as a 40-foot container, illegal parking as well as water logged areas at various junctions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Funding for the Second Road Infrastructure Rehabilitation Project is being funded through a loan from the Caribbean Development Bank with counterpart funding from the Government of Antigua and Barbuda.<\/span><\/p>

Community Liaison Officer, Mrs. Anne Harewood George expressed profound appreciation on behalf of the Ministry of Works and the project management team for the high level of stakeholder engagement.<\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

\u201cWe want stakeholders to feel empowered and contribute to the consultation process because their input serves to improve project implementation and promotes local ownership of the initiative.<\/span><\/p>\n

CEO of the Antigua and Barbuda Port Authority Mr. Darwin Telemaque, also attended the consultation. He applauded the project management team and said that historically the 40-foot containers experienced difficulty when maneuvering turns at the junctions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Telimaque pointed out that the new roundabout on Friars Hill Road has significantly improved road safety eased traffic congestion.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
