Following record-breaking performances, Samantha Roberts and Stefano Mitchell will be the Antiguan\u00a0 and Barbudan representatives at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. <\/span><\/p>

Their attendance was confirmed by the\u00a0 international swimming federation, FINA, on June 30<\/span>th<\/span>, 2021 in the events of 50 metre freestyle\u00a0 (Roberts) and 100 metre freestyle (Mitchell).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mitchell\u2019s current record for the 100 metre stands at 50.98, a time he achieved at the Colombian\u00a0 Nationals in June 2021. Roberts\u2019 attained her 50 metre standard of 27.27 at the 2019 World\u00a0 Championships in Korea.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Both Roberts and Mitchell have recently trained in Florida, under Azura\u2019s Coach Gianluca, who is\u00a0 bursting with pride. <\/span><\/p>

He said, \u201cBoth swimmers have been amazing, they have had a great journey all\u00a0 these months training with Azura in Florida. Samantha has amazing energy and strength. I am very\u00a0 optimistic that she will continue to represent Antigua internationally in the best way. Stefano showed\u00a0 that if you want something, you just go out there and get it. He pushed all the way to the end, never\u00a0 gave up, and always wanted more. They both earned it. I am very proud, as their coach, to have been\u00a0 part of this process and I am very enthusiastic to see what\u2019s coming next.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In preparation for the July 23<\/span>rd <\/span>Olympic start, both Mitchell and Roberts are ready. \u201cI\u2019m extremely proud\u00a0 to represent my country at the Olympic Games,\u201d Mitchell says. <\/span><\/p>

\u201cThis is where my passion lies, and I\u2019m\u00a0 looking forward to doing my very best alongside the fastest in the world.\u201d For her part, Roberts is\u00a0 heading in with a keen eye on her current record. \u201cIt is a huge honor to be able to represent, especially\u00a0 at such a high level of competition. I am ready to go and enjoy competing. I just hope to achieve a best\u00a0 time, especially after these last months of training,\u201d she stated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Both swimmers have participated in competitive swimming for over a decade, joining the National Team\u00a0 roster in 2009 to represent Antigua in the 8 and Under age category. They entered the sport through\u00a0 local club swimming, attaining their current level of expertise and acclaim through their dedication and\u00a0 commitment. <\/span><\/p>

Their local training through primary and secondary school culminated in prestigious\u00a0 National Olympic Committee (NOC) scholarships, providing a vivid testament to the value of Antiguan\u00a0 and Barbudan training and self-discipline.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The attending National Coach for Antigua and Barbuda, Wayne Mitchell, is psyched for the upcoming\u00a0 performances. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSamantha was able to use her mental strength, a true testimony to her hard work and\u00a0 natural capabilities. Stefano has an unbelievable work ethic. He has this ability to use emotional energy\u00a0 and turn it into a sound performance. Currently, both swimmers are training together twice a day. They\u00a0 are looking really good and will make themselves and their country proud,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Derek Marshall, President of the ABSF (Antigua Barbuda Swimming Federation), is looking forward to\u00a0 the Olympic performances. \u201cOur swimmers continue to improve by leaps and bounds and our\u00a0 delegation to the Olympics this year demonstrates that. Both Stefano and Samantha are familiar with\u00a0 representing on the national and international stage, and we look forward to excellent performances.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

The Federation is extremely proud of their achievements thus far, as our local swimmers demonstrate\u00a0 how bright the future of swimming in Antigua and Barbuda is.\u201d Roberts and Mitchell are participating\u00a0 under universality placements, a points-based ranking system intended to encourage smaller nations to\u00a0 develop their athletics programs and promote international competition. Under universality, countries\u00a0 without a qualifying swimmer may enter one male and one female athlete to compete at the Olympics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mitchell\u2019s race, the 100m freestyle, will be held on July 27<\/span>th<\/span>, and Roberts\u2019 event of 50m freestyle on\u00a0 July 30<\/span>th<\/span>. Locally, both athletes\u2019 events will be held at 6:00 am. Each swimmer holds the current National\u00a0 Record in their respective event.<\/span><\/p>\n
