The National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) is recommending the provinces stop administering the AstraZeneca vaccine in most cases \u2014 even as booster shots for people who\u2019ve already received first doses of the product.<\/p>

NACI said Thursday that\u00a0AstraZeneca recipients should instead receive a second dose of an mRNA vaccine, like the ones offered by Pfizer and Moderna.<\/p>\n

<\/section>\n

\u201cAn mRNA vaccine is now preferred as the second dose for individuals who received a first dose of the AstraZeneca\/COVISHIELD vaccine, based on emerging evidence of a potentially better immune response from this mixed vaccine schedule,\u201d NACI said in a statement released today. The \u201cmixed vaccine schedule\u201d\u00a0refers\u00a0to the practice of using different products for the first and second doses.<\/p>

The guidance to divert\u00a0AstraZeneca doses from the supply chain comes weeks after NACI, an independent body composed of volunteer experts, said the AstraZeneca shot is not the \u201cpreferred\u201d product for first doses given its associated risk of vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT) \u2014 a condition that causes blood clots combined with low platelets.<\/p>

NACI said there is also a risk of developing VITT after receiving a second dose of AstraZeneca.<\/p>\n

Since early May, all provinces have halted the use of AstraZeneca for first doses. Many have\u00a0continued using for\u00a0booster shots.<\/p>

NACI said people who already have\u00a0had two doses of AstraZeneca \u201ccan rest assured that the vaccine provides good protection against infection and very good protection against severe disease and hospitalization.\u201d<\/p>\n
