The Royal Navy has delivered 75 tonnes of crucial aid to Commonwealth citizens
\nwhose lives have been thrown into turmoil by a volcano.<\/p>

 <\/p>\n

Royal Fleet Auxiliary support ship RFA Wave Knight offloaded 139 pallets of
\nemergency assistance in St Vincent \u2013 the Caribbean island badly affected by the
\nunexpected and violent eruptions of La Soufri\u00e8re in April.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The intense volcanic activity has forced the evacuation of the northern half of St
\nVincent \u2013 the main island of the Commonwealth nation of St Vincent and the
\nGrenadines \u2013 displacing around 14,000 islanders.<\/p>

 <\/p>\n

The mission to deliver aid to St Vincent has added poignancy for the Royal Navy \u2013
\nmore than 500 people from St Vincent serve under the White Ensign and have been
\ndeeply affected by what has happened in their homeland, prompting various
\nfundraising and relief efforts on ships and in naval bases in the UK.<\/p>

Armed Forces Minister James Heappey said:<\/p>\n

\u201cRecent events on St Vincent were a tragedy, but disasters like this are precisely
\nwhy we have Royal Navy assets deployed to the Caribbean \u2013 to provide vital relief
\nand assistance to people there when needed in times of crisis.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Our servicemen and women were able to act quickly and decisively when this
\nrequest came in, delivering these essential supplies to where they needed to be
\nwithin hours.\u201d<\/p>\n

The eruptions \u2013 the first major volcanic activity on the island in 40 years \u2013 dumped a
\nthick layer of ash over homes and public buildings. Islanders were forced to seek
\nshelter away from the danger zone in temporary camps, where basic supplies are
\nnow in short supply.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Tanker Wave Knight \u2013 which carries a Royal Navy Wildcat helicopter, disaster relief
\nsupplies and thousands of tonnes of fuel \u2013 collected an assortment of aid from the
\npeople of Barbados and the World Health Organisation during a lightning stop in
\nBridgetown this week.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

Sailors and Royal Marines loaded toiletries, sanitary items, cleaning products, tinned
\nfood, bottled water and other essential goods before making the 100-mile journey
\nwest to St Vincent. Just hours later, despite it being well into the night, the aid was
\noffloaded in Kingstown, the St Vincent capital.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The UK government has already provided \u00a3800,000 of funding to meet the essential
\nneeds of the people of St Vincent and provide technical expertise to coordinate the
\nrelief effort since the volcano erupted.<\/p>\n

Captain Simon Herbert, RFA Wave Knight\u2019s Commanding Officer, added:
\n\u201cMy ship\u2019s company are keen to demonstrate the UK\u2019s commitment to the security
\nand stability of the region and to alleviate the humanitarian threat caused by the
\nvolcano crisis on St Vincent.<\/p>\n

Among the UK service personnel affected by the disaster was the family of Able
\nSeaman Rickal Grant, a Royal Navy logistics expert serving with Wave Knight.\u201d
\nAble Seaman Grant said:<\/p>\n

\u201cI have children that have been displaced by the eruption. The people displaced,
\nincluding my family, will benefit from this humanitarian aid given by the people of
\nBarbados. I am happy to be a part of the ship\u2019s company delivering this aid.\u201d
\nWave Knight left Scotland a fortnight ago to join the Royal Navy\u2019s permanent
\npresence in the Caribbean and North Atlantic, patrol ship HMS Medway.<\/p>\n

Individually and together, the pair provide support and reassurance to Britain\u2019s
\nOverseas Territories in the region, as well as Commonwealth states. They are on
\nhand to deliver aid in the event of natural disasters \u2013 the Atlantic hurricane season
\nhas just begun \u2013 and work with local authorities and allies to prevent drug trafficking
\nbetween South and North America.<\/p>\n
