The United Progressive Party notes, with serious concern, recent statements attributed to Prime Minister Gaston Browne in relation to Mr. Mehul Choksi, a citizen of Antigua and Barbuda.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

\n

Mr. Choksi, who is facing extradition to India <\/span><\/span>by way of<\/span><\/span> the normal legal and constitutional process, alleges that he was abducted and taken against his will to Dominica.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

In a shocking statement on the matter, Prime Minister Browne indicated that <\/span><\/span>the Government of Dominica should deport <\/span><\/span>Mr. Choksi directly to India and not <\/span><\/span>return him<\/span><\/span> to Antigua <\/span><\/span>and Barbuda <\/span><\/span>because he would be protected by the Constitution<\/span><\/span> here<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

This statement is both irresponsible and frightening. \u00a0It is not for the Prime Minister to decide who is entitled to the protection of the Constitution. \u00a0We are a nation of laws<\/span><\/span>:<\/span><\/span> E<\/span><\/span>very citizen of Antigua and Barbuda is entitled to due process<\/span><\/span> and the rule of law must be respected by all.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

It was the Gaston Browne Administration that granted citizenship to Mr. Choksi. \u00a0Under Section 9 of the <\/span><\/span>India Citizenship Act<\/span><\/span>, once a citizen of India accepts citizenship of another country, his Indian citizenship is automatically cancelled.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

\n

<\/a>Accordingly, as inconvenient and embarrassing as it may be for the Government, Mr. Choksi <\/span><\/span>is<\/span><\/span> a citizen of Antigua and Barbuda \u2013 not India.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The alleged abduction and beating of Mr. Choksi already paint an unflattering picture of the country, and Prime Minister Browne\u2019s deliberate attempt to subvert and corrupt the rule of law makes us look even worse.<\/span><\/span><\/p>
