Billy Porter revealed he\u2019s HIV-positive in his new cover story for The Hollywood Reporter.<\/p>

The \u201cPose\u201d star, 51, said he was diagnosed in June 2007 and kept it a secret for years from mostly everyone, including his mother.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was trying to have a life and a career, and I wasn\u2019t certain I could if the wrong people knew,\u201d Porter said. \u201cIt would just be another way for people to discriminate against me in an already discriminatory profession.\u201d<\/p>

The Broadway star, who is just an Oscar away from becoming an EGOT winner, called 2007 his worst year, as he already had been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and signed bankruptcy papers.<\/p>

<\/div>\n

\u201cThe shame of that time compounded with the shame that had already [accumulated] in my life silenced me, and I have lived with that shame in silence for 14 years,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHIV-positive, where I come from, growing up in the Pentecostal church with a very religious family, is God\u2019s punishment.\u201d<\/p>

Porter, who relocated to Long Island with husband Adam Smith amid the pandemic, credited quarantine with forcing him to face his life\u2019s traumas, including the sexual abuse he endured from ages 7 to 12 at the hands of his stepfather.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere has never been a moment that I\u2019ve not been in trauma, which is what I\u2019ve discovered this last year,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd it was my engine for a very long time. My trauma served me, my story has served me, in terms of forward motion.\u201d<\/p>

<\/div>\n

The former \u201cKinky Boots\u201d star credited his HIV-positive character on FX\u2019s \u201cPose,\u201d Pray Tell, with helping him come to terms with his real-life diagnosis.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

\u201cAn opportunity to work through the shame [of HIV] and where I have gotten to in this moment,\u201d Porter explained. \u201cAnd the brilliance of Pray Tell and this opportunity was that I was able to say everything that I wanted to say through a surrogate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Porter revealed he was so \u201cembarrassed and ashamed\u201d by his HIV-positive diagnosis that he concealed it from his mother, who had already faced religious persecution because of her gay son.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was the statistic that everybody said I would be. So I\u2019d made a pact with myself that I would let her die before I told her. That\u2019s what I was waiting for, if I\u2019m being honest,\u201d he shared. \u201cWhen we moved her into the Actors Fund Nursing Home, I was like, \u2018She\u2019s not going to be here long, and then I\u2019ll write my book and come out and she won\u2019t have to live with the embarrassment of having an HIV-positive child.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was five years ago. She ain\u2019t going anywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201cLike a Boss\u201d actor finally shared his truth with his mom this year, and she couldn\u2019t believe he had concealed it from her.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018I love you no matter what,\u2019\u201d he said she told him.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut the truth shall set you free. I feel my heart releasing,\u201d Porter reflected. \u201cIt had felt like a hand was holding my heart clenched for years \u2014 for years \u2014 and it\u2019s all gone. And it couldn\u2019t have happened at a better time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now the \u201chealthiest\u201d he\u2019s ever been, Porter is focusing on the future.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo it\u2019s time to let all that go and tell a different story,\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s no more stigma \u2014 let\u2019s be done with that. It\u2019s time. I\u2019ve been living it and being in the shame of it for long enough.\u201d<\/p>\n
