AFP \u2014 Britain\u2019s parliamentary standards watchdog confirmed Monday it is investigating Prime Minister Boris Johnson over how he paid for a luxury Caribbean holiday, the latest of multiple probes into his conduct.<\/p>

Kathryn Stone, the current Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards, is looking into the controversial trip to the privately owned island of Mustique\u00a0over\u00a0Christmas 2019 by the\u00a0UK\u00a0leader and his fianc\u00e9e Carrie Symonds.<\/p>\n

Johnson, who was buoyed by successful local election results in England last week, has long been dogged by questions about the\u00a0holiday.<\/p>

In the register of MPs\u2019 interests, he claimed the \u00a315,000 (US$21,200, 17,400 euros) trip\u00a0was provided by David Ross, a businessman and donor to his ruling Conservative party.<\/p>

<\/div>\n

However, there was confusion after Ross initially denied handing\u00a0over\u00a0any money, and later clarified that it was a \u201cbenefit in kind\u201d.<\/p>\n

Johnson\u2019s spokesman reiterated Monday that the British premier had followed the rules throughout.<\/p>

\u201cThe prime minister transparently declared this benefit in kind in the Commons register of interests,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cClearly the rules are set out and it\u2019s important that everyone abides by them.\u201d<\/p>

Meanwhile a spokesman for Ross said in a statement he had \u201cfacilitated accommodation\u201d for\u00a0Johnson\u00a0on Mustique which was valued at \u00a315,000.<\/p>

\u201cTherefore this is a benefit in kind from Mr Ross to Mr\u00a0Johnson, and Mr\u00a0Johnson\u2019s declaration to the House of Commons is correct.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2013 \u2018Lavish lifestyle\u2019 \u2013<\/h2>\n

The\u00a0luxury\u00a0trip is one of a host of controversies swirling around the British leader that have sparked multiple investigations by watchdogs and scrutiny agencies.<\/p>\n

They include a\u00a0probe\u00a0by the Electoral Commission, which regulates the accounts of political parties, into who initially footed the bill for a reported \u00a3200,000 (230,000 euros) refurbishment of\u00a0Johnson\u2019s Downing Street flat.<\/p>\n

The parliamentary commissioner \u2014 an independent figure \u2014 investigates allegations that MPs have breached parliamentary code of conduct rules, which include correctly declaring financial interests and gifts.<\/p>\n

Stone, who confirmed the\u00a0Johnson\u00a0probe\u00a0is one of nine current investigations into lawmakers for possible breaches, can refer serious offences to parliament\u2019s Committee on Standards for sanctioning.<\/p>\n

The main opposition Labour Party \u2014 which is still reeling from a disappointing performance in last Thursday\u2019s local elections \u2014 seized on the latest\u00a0probe\u00a0as further evidence of \u201csleaze\u201d within\u00a0Johnson\u2019s government.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to know what these donors were promised or expected in return for their generosity,\u201d said Labour deputy leader Angela Rayner.<\/p>\n

\u201cBoris\u00a0Johnson\u00a0needs to stop using the office of Prime Minister as an opportunity to fund his lavish lifestyle and enrich his mates.\u201d<\/p>\n
