Sen. Richard S. Lewis, the United Progressive Party\u2019s Minority Leader in the Senate, and the UPP\u2019s candidate for the Rural West Constituency in the upcoming general elections, has made a timely donation of polo shirts and an assortment of drinks to the Halcyon Steel Orchestra on the celebration of its 50th Anniversary as a champion progenitor of steelpan music.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Mr. Dwayne Mussington, Halycon\u2019s Band Captain, and Mr. Fitzroy “Blakie” Philip, a longstanding band member, accepted the items on behalf of the band.\u00a0 In making his presentation and offering his congratulations to Halcyon, Sen. Lewis pledged his continued support to the band which has embarked on a series of events to commemorate its 50 years of existence and providing enriching steel band music for the people of Antigua and Barbuda, and indeed, the world.<\/p>\n

In a video made for the occasion, Lewis took the opportunity to congratulate the Halcyon Steel Orchestra, which he called a \u201cleading cultural institution in our Gray\u2019s Green community\u201d.<\/p>

He also went on to give a brief history of the Band and its successful emergence in the St. John\u2019s Rural West Community. He spoke of the role that Sir Selvyn Walter (now deceased) played in the life of the Band and his delivery on a campaign promise he made fifty (50) years ago to residents to establish a steel orchestra in the community.<\/p>

 <\/p>\n

The establishment of the band gave birth to a great cultural institution.\u00a0Sen. Lewis commended and thanked Sir Selvyn for his hard work, along with the help of other founding members, to build that solid foundation on which the band continues to exist.<\/p>

\u201cWe thank him and the other founding members for their major contribution to the development of Halcyon,\u201d Sen. Lewis said.<\/p>\n

It was with a lot of pride that Lewis highlighted the historic development and the crowning achievements of the Halcyon in the steelpan competition arena\u201d.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

\u201cThe development of Halcyon Steel Orchestra continued under the management of Dr. the Hon. Baldwin Spencer, Parliamentary Representative for St John\u2019s Rural West from 1989 to 2018, and Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda from 2004 to 2014.\u00a0Dr. Spencer continues to play a major role in keeping the band relevant.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sen. Lewis was full of praise for the role that Dr. Spencer played and thanked him for his contribution to the advancement of steelpan music in the community.<\/p>\n

\u201cHalcyon has been a dominant force in the steelpan fraternity in Antigua and Barbuda.\u00a0 This is quite evident in the fact that from 1971 to present, the band won a whopping 13 Panorama Championships – 1975, 1978, 1979, 1986, 1987, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2016.\u00a0 The only steel band to \u201cfour peat\u201d in the history of the Panorama Competition.<\/p>\n

For all of us who grew up in the community, Halcyon Steel Orchestra played a critical role in our cultural upbringing and awareness.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt has been 50 years, and we jamming still,\u201d boasted Lewis, with pride.\u00a0 \u201c50 years, with musical talent and skill.\u00a0 50 years of pan music in the air.\u00a050 years, with passion, style and flair. 50 years of providing the nation with pulsating steelpan music that helped in uniting us as a people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sen. Lewis also thanked the Halcyon on behalf of his family both at home and abroad, and also the residents of the Rural West Community, and especially thanked all the players, arrangers, the management team, members and supporters past and present, for their contributions in advancing the steelpan musical art form.<\/p>\n

Sen. Lewis also had special thanks for Rashida Romeo and Stafford Lewis for their assistance in making the donation possible. He ended with exhortations to the Halcyon:<\/p>\n

\u201cMay you continue as that cultural shining light in our community from Gilpin’s Corner through to Five Islands.<\/p>\n
