Experts at The\u00a0UWI Seismic Research Centre\u00a0(UWI-SRC)\u00a0advise that\u00a0La\u00a0Soufri\u00e8re\u00a0volcano in Saint Vincent\u00a0and the Grenadines remains dangerous despite pauses\u00a0in explosive activity.<\/p>

During\u00a0a\u00a0virtual\u00a0press conference\u00a0hosted on Wednesday,\u00a0April 21, Rod Stewart, Volcano-Seismologist from the UWI-SRC\/Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO) emphasized, \u201c…although\u00a0it is\u00a0easy to identify\u00a0the start of eruptions,\u00a0conclusively saying\u00a0when eruptions\u00a0are over,\u00a0often\u00a0proves\u00a0more difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The UWI-SRC and Vincentian\u00a0authorities\u00a0continue to monitor developments at the volcano,\u00a0as they have been\u00a0since\u00a0the onset of heightened activity\u00a0in\u00a0December\u00a02020, which entered an explosive phase on April 9, 2021. \u00a0Advice provided by the UWI\u2013SRC\u00a0enabled\u00a0the successful evacuation of 13,000 residents from the designated \u2018RED ZONE\u2019\u00a024 hours\u00a0prior\u00a0to the first explosion of the volcano.\u00a0Thirty-two discrete explosions have been observed since the\u00a0onset of explosive\u00a0activity. To date, there has been no loss of life.\u00a0Ash from these\u00a0explosions has\u00a0been\u00a0the\u00a0primary\u00a0hazard.\u00a0Buildings and infrastructure\u00a0have\u00a0suffered\u00a0damage\u00a0in Saint\u00a0Vincent and nearby Barbados\u00a0was also\u00a0severely\u00a0impacted\u00a0for several days.\u00a0Explosive events have become less frequent over time,\u00a0with the period\u00a0between explosions\u00a0increasing as the eruption progresses.<\/p>

Professor Richard Robertson, UWI-SRC, Scientific Team Lead estimates\u00a0that\u00a0the explosivity seen during this current eruption, is greater than\u00a0in\u00a01979, and more comparable to the 1902 eruption.<\/p>

 <\/p>\n

The UWI-SRC Field Scientists\u00a0based\u00a0at the Belmont Observatory in Saint\u00a0Vincent\u00a0are part of larger team of\u00a0seismic and engineering\u00a0technicians,\u00a0ground\u00a0deformation specialists\u00a0and\u00a0communication experts based\u00a0at the MVO and\u00a0in\u00a0St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago.\u00a0Several international agencies and\u00a0academic colleagues\u00a0have also\u00a0made valuable\u00a0contributions\u00a0to the current understanding of\u00a0the eruption.\u00a0The UWI-SRC remains\u00a0ready\u00a0to serve the region despite\u00a0a perennial challenge to\u00a0secure resources.<\/p>\n

Dr.\u00a0Erouscilla\u00a0Joseph, Director of the UWI-SRC, invited donor agencies\u00a0willing\u00a0to partner with the UWI-SRC\u00a0to \u201ccome on-board.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0She noted, \u201creducing the regions vulnerability to natural hazards will require many hands.\u00a0Our\u00a0University of the West Indies continues to demonstrate the value of regional integration\u00a0and\u00a0its capacity to supply\u00a0leaders\u00a0to\u00a0meet any circumstance.\u201d<\/p>
