The Department of Environment (DOE) would like to inform the residents of Gem and Penny Lanes, as well as the general public of Antigua and Barbuda, of the work being carried out in the Lower Gambles area as part of the Adaptation Fund (AF) Project.<\/p>

This work will involve the closure of these roads to accommodate the widening of the waterway and the upgrade of culverts to improve water flow and reduce the likelihood of flooding and mosquito-borne diseases within the area.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The work is being implemented by the Department of Environment and executed by Challengers Enterprises Limited with funding from the Adaptation Fund.<\/p>

It is anticipated that on completion of this project that residents and property owners will be better protected against flash flooding events, storms, and hurricanes.<\/p>

The Project \u201cAn integrated approach to physical adaptation and community resilience in Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s northwest McKinnon\u2019s watershed\u201d, also known as the Adaptation Fund or AF Project, seeks to reduce the vulnerability of the community by increaseing the ability of the watershed to handle extreme rainfall, while increasing the resilience of the built environment simultaneously to cope with the multiple stressors of climate change. This integrated approach will ensure the community will be able to withstand projected climate change impacts while the ecosystems can accommodate increased rainfall.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The three specific objectives are to:<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n
    \n
  1. Implement concrete adaptation actions that suppot natural and physical drainage systems along the 3 km urban and semi-urban waterways to meet project cliamte change, in particular extreme hydro-meterological events and disease vectors<\/li>\n
  2. Disburse concessional loans through a revolving fund mechanism to vulnerable households and businesses to meet new adaptation guidelines and standards for built infrastructure to withstand extreme climate variability.<\/li>\n
  3. Support adaptive capacity and local ownership of adaptation through community-awarded contracts and climate resilient community buildings such as community centers, schools and clinics. This will include interventions to allow the buildings to withstand hurricanes and droughts and serve as shelters.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
