As the island of St. Vincent reels from the impact of the erupting La Soufri\u00e8re volcano, the Office of the President in Guyana has reported that \u201cIrfaan Ali will be heading Guyana\u2019s humanitarian response; to the disaster.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve been fairly encouraged that the Guyanese there are taken care of. There is no request on movement or anything\u201d, the President is highlighted in the statement.<\/p>

President Ali met and held discussions on Saturday with the Guyana Civil Defence Commission and the private sector agencies about Guyana\u2019s response to the difficulty.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

At the meeting, the President marked the importance of getting emergency items, including water and food, over to St Vincent and the Grenadines in the fastest possible time.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

He told members of the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) and the Private Sector Commission. They coordinate an emergency response that, given the urgency in the sister CARICOM nation, supplies from Guyana must set sail within 48 hours.<\/p>

The President disclosed that the islands\u2019 needs have multiplied over the last 24 hours since the eruption of the Soufri\u00e8re volcano.<\/p>\n

Along with the immediate response, the President pointed out that the Guyana Defence Force is on standby if required on the ground in the aftermath of the eruption.<\/p>

\u201cThe situation has changed drastically overnight, and indeed what was immediate is now extremely urgent\u201d, President Ali announced.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

The President stated he has been in regular contact with the\u00a0Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.<\/a>\u00a0as other Caribbean nations also extend a helping hand.<\/p>\n

More than 20,000 individuals have been evacuated from the communities close to the volcano as this volcanic ash blanketed several communities and destroyed homes.<\/p>\n

Nearby sister islands, including Barbados and St. Lucia, have also observed the ash moving in over their shores.<\/p>\n
