Dear Editor,<\/p>

The\u00a0reality\u00a0is\u00a0The Early Childhood Sector is collapsing under the pressures of the\u00a0COVID-19\u00a0pandemic, with\u00a0lots\u00a0of low-paid workers\u00a0losing\u00a0their\u00a0jobs\u00a0and many centers forced to\u00a0close\u00a0their\u00a0doors.\u00a0Nationwide, last\u00a0year\u00a0many\u00a0centers\u00a0were\u00a0forced\u00a0to\u00a0close\u00a0their\u00a0doors\u00a0because of\u00a0not being able\u00a0to\u00a0pay\u00a0their\u00a0rent\u00a0and\u00a0meet\u00a0payroll.<\/p>\n

With the\u00a0start\u00a0of the 2020 – 2019\u00a0school\u00a0year, some\u00a0providers\u00a0tried\u00a0to\u00a0keep\u00a0their\u00a0doors\u00a0open to\u00a0ensure\u00a0their financial security.\u00a0However, with the\u00a0combination\u00a0of the\u00a0costs\u00a0to\u00a0meet\u00a0safety protocols and lower revenue from the enrolment of fewer children job losses and program closures is inevitable.<\/p>\n

Many\u00a0Early Childhood<\/strong>\u00a0directors,\u00a0teachers\u00a0and\u00a0parents\u00a0are\u00a0calling\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0centers\u00a0to be\u00a0opened\u00a0each for various\u00a0obvious\u00a0reasons.\u00a0Directors\u00a0are trying\u00a0to recoup some of their\u00a0investment\u00a0to\u00a0meet\u00a0the\u00a0COVID-19\u00a0protocol standard and along with the\u00a0teachers\u00a0to be able to\u00a0get\u00a0a\u00a0salary\/wage.\u00a0Parents\u00a0are looking somewhere to\u00a0send\u00a0their\u00a0children\u00a0so that they can\u00a0get\u00a0to\u00a0work and in some\u00a0cases\u00a0to\u00a0get\u00a0a\u00a0break\u00a0from their\u00a0children.\u00a0The\u00a0situation\u00a0is further exacerbated by\u00a0having\u00a0the fourth and fifth formers going back out to\u00a0school.\u00a0These\u00a0siblings\u00a0may have been\u00a0helping\u00a0taking care of the little ones.<\/p>

\"\"<\/div>\n

Why Not Open All The School?
\n<\/strong>Although it is\u00a0said, that\u00a0younger\u00a0children may\u00a0be\u00a0less\u00a0likely\u00a0get sick from the corona virus, they are however\u00a0more vulnerable, most\u00a0likely\u00a0to\u00a0spread\u00a0the\u00a0virus\u00a0amongst themselves and\u00a0adults.\u00a0We\u00a0have\u00a0to\u00a0be mindful that the\u00a0virus\u00a0is\u00a0spread\u00a0by the\u00a0mixing\u00a0of\u00a0different\u00a0people from\u00a0different\u00a0households\u00a0together.\u00a0Preschoolers\u00a0should\u00a0not\u00a0be forced\u00a0to social distance.\u00a0According\u00a0to World Health Organization\u00a0(WHO)\u00a0they should\u00a0not\u00a0wear\u00a0masks\u00a0under the\u00a0age\u00a0of five.\u00a0Although\u00a0not\u00a0done\u00a0intentionally children sneeze and\u00a0couch\u00a0on each other.<\/p>

All this while potentially\u00a0may\u00a0be coming from\u00a0homes\u00a0that\u00a0may\u00a0have\u00a0individuals\u00a0with the\u00a0virus.\u00a0Older adults and those\u00a0who\u00a0may\u00a0have\u00a0underlying health\u00a0conditions\u00a0are\u00a0at increased risk to contract the\u00a0virus.\u00a0It\u2019s actually recommended persons with respiratory\u00a0condition\u00a0should be\u00a0encouraged\u00a0to stay away from\u00a0children\u00a0who\u00a0attend\u00a0early childhood centers.Even\u00a0children\u00a0who\u00a0may have compromised immunologic\u00a0conditions\u00a0are\u00a0advised\u00a0to stay away from early childhood centers.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0argument\u00a0could be\u00a0made\u00a0that now older\u00a0siblings\u00a0re:\u00a0forms five and four students who might have been helping parents to\u00a0look\u00a0after\u00a0younger\u00a0siblings\u00a0are going back out to school supervision of\u00a0younger\u00a0children will be\u00a0limited.\u00a0Therefore,\u00a0preschools\u00a0should be\u00a0open.\u00a0If that\u2019s the case, the kindergartners and\u00a0grade\u00a0one to four\u00a0students\u00a0should go back to\u00a0school?\u00a0We might as well\u00a0open\u00a0the doors of all the\u00a0schools\u00a0fully if early childhood centres are\u00a0allowed\u00a0to\u00a0open.\u00a0However that\u00a0is not\u00a0prudent\u00a0at this\u00a0time.<\/p>

The Health Of The Nation\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

We all\u00a0know\u00a0the\u00a0fall\u00a0out of the economic situation is\u00a0affecting\u00a0everyone in the early childhood sector at the\u00a0moment.\u00a0However, the\u00a0truth\u00a0is\u00a0we are not in a good space with our\u00a0covid\u00a0numbers.\u00a0It\u2019s not in the\u00a0best\u00a0interest of the\u00a0health\u00a0of the\u00a0nation\u00a0to\u00a0open\u00a0preschools.\u00a0The\u00a0mandate\u00a0is\u00a0on the\u00a0health\u00a0department, Chief medical officer\u00a0(CMO)\u00a0and other\u00a0health\u00a0official to\u00a0ensure\u00a0the\u00a0people\u00a0of the\u00a0nation\u00a0remain\u00a0safe.\u00a0They\u00a0need\u00a0to pay\u00a0attention to community\u00a0health\u00a0and focus on the\u00a0prevention\u00a0of the\u00a0spread\u00a0of the\u00a0virus.<\/p>

As the\u00a0health\u00a0authority,\u00a0policy makers\u00a0and others work towards containing the\u00a0spread\u00a0of the\u00a0virus, and\u00a0manage\u00a0the pandemic as best as they
\ncan.\u00a0Let\u00a0us\u00a0play\u00a0our\u00a0part\u00a0in\u00a0following\u00a0the\u00a0protocols.\u00a0Now\u00a0is\u00a0the\u00a0time\u00a0for\u00a0caregivers\u00a0to\u00a0demonstrate\u00a0their commitment preserving
\nthe\u00a0health\u00a0and\u00a0safety\u00a0of\u00a0children\u00a0and\u00a0families.\u00a0Reopening\u00a0centers\u00a0would\u00a0be\u00a0an
\nindictment\u00a0of a\u00a0society\u00a0that\u00a0says\u00a0children\u00a0are\u00a0our\u00a0future.\u00a0At the\u00a0end\u00a0of\u00a0the pandemic wealth would be none existent.\u00a0However, we would at least\u00a0health\u00a0would be preserved allowing all to move forward to rebuild the\u00a0product\u00a0and come out stronger.<\/p>
