On Tuesday, March 30th, Prime Minister Gaston Browne received a commissioned art piece from Mr. Carl A Christopher, artist, creative mind, and proprietor of AGWASSA clothing and art studios.<\/p>

 <\/p>\n

The piece which was specifically commissioned by PM Browne was presented in marking the celebration of Women\u2019s History Month.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

According to the artist, the piece, entitled \u2018Mudda\u2019 which is what we colloquially called our Grandmothers, is based on a Ugandan concept, depicting multitasking and hard-working women. \u201cIt is representing the women you may find in our government and in the world of work who are key in keeping the fabric of society together. These women may not get a lot of the credit, may not get their names called, yet they balance work and keeping the family together. This piece helps to celebrate them.\u201d<\/p>

In accepting the commissioned artwork, PM Browne said, \u201cThis is a beautiful piece that depicts one of our forebears\u2019 multitasking, working the field, while at the same time caring for her young. As we end the celebration of Women\u2019s International Month, I want to use this opportunity to recommit myself personally to the empowerment of all women here in Antigua and Barbuda, within the region, and globally. Women are the backbone of our society, and we must love, cherish, protect and empower them.\u201d<\/p>

PM Browne continued by expressing his sincere thanks to the entrepreneur.<\/p>\n

\u201cCarl, I thank you very much, this is great work, a great story and I hope you will do several more of these pieces as we document our history, not only in word but its art. I hope that other artist will follow your lead and prepare similar pieces which will help to document our history in art and certainly the contribution of our women to the development of our society.\u201d<\/p>

Women\u2019s History Month is a celebration of women\u2019s contributions to history, culture, and society and has been observed annually in March since 1987. Women\u2019s History Month takes place March 1st -Wednesday, March 31st.<\/p>\n
