A Crowdfunding Project entitled, “Mitigating the impacts of COVID-19 through the supply of fresh food to rural households,” is an Inter-American Institute for Collaboration in Agriculture (IICA) initiative, which is being done in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) and the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI).<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

This project aims to assist farmers in Antigua and Barbuda in boosting production on their farms and further contribute to food nutrition and security.<\/p>\n

Yesterday, Lescharles Joseph of Jennings, a beneficiary, received assistance from IICA, CARDI and the MOA technical team in installing a complete drip irrigation system on his farm.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Prior to becoming a beneficiary of this project, Mr. Joseph explained that he would have to harvest water when it rains and truck water to his farm but now that he has a drip irrigation system, it will help him greatly.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

He expressed his thanks to IICA, CARDI and MoA for aiding him, \u201cit will be so beneficial to me to improve on the crops growing, the amount of food I can produce in higher quantities and without water farming is nothing, and so I am so grateful to be one of the beneficiaries of this project.\u201d<\/p>\n

South West District Officer Onecia Anthony- Martin expressed that being a beneficiary of the project is a great opportunity for Mr. Joseph, because he is now able to produce more food now that he will access to water and a full irrigation system.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

\u201cI am so proud of him as one of the younger farmers in the area who is now establishing himself and we are able to help him through the help of this crowdfunding project,\u201d stated Mrs. Anthony-Martin.<\/p>\n

She also expressed that she is happy to see a young farmer paving the way for other farmers in the district and other districts as well, especially since the perception of what agriculture is has changed tremendously.<\/p>

\u201cI am glad to see that young persons are now getting into agriculture, because I remember growing up as a child, agriculture used to be seen as dirty work, but now persons are looking at it from a business point of view and people are seeing the importance of not only the business aspect but also being able to feed our country,\u201d stated Mrs. Anthony-Martin.<\/p>
