Internet Center finds that many expect similar impacts to emerge from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/topics\/coronavirus-disease-2019-covid-19\/\">COVID-19 outbreak<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div rely more on digital connections for work, education, health care, daily commercial transactions and essential social interactions. Many respondents said their deepest worry is over the seemingly unstoppable manipulation of public perception, emotion and action via online disinformation \u2013 lies and hate speech deliberately weaponized in order to propagate destructive biases and fears. They worry about significant damage to social stability and cohesion and the reduced likelihood of rational deliberation and evidence-based policymaking.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At the same time, a portion of these experts express hope that changes spawned by the pandemic will make things better for significant portions of the population because of changes that:<\/p><div id=\"antig-569224211\" class=\"antig-content_2 antig-entity-placement\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.courts.com\/antigua\/\" aria-label=\"500X500 (1)\"><img src=\"https:\/\/mlavawteztbj.i.optimole.com\/w:500\/h:500\/q:mauto\/f:best\/https:\/\/antiguanewsroom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/500X500-1.jpg\" alt=\"\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/mlavawteztbj.i.optimole.com\/w:500\/h:500\/q:mauto\/f:best\/https:\/\/antiguanewsroom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/500X500-1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/mlavawteztbj.i.optimole.com\/w:300\/h:300\/q:mauto\/f:best\/https:\/\/antiguanewsroom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/500X500-1.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mlavawteztbj.i.optimole.com\/w:150\/h:150\/q:mauto\/f:best\/https:\/\/antiguanewsroom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/500X500-1.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\"   \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div id=\"antig-237277812\" class=\"antig-content_2\"><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>inaugurate new reforms aimed at racial justice and social equity\u00a0<\/strong>as critiques of current economic arrangements \u2013 and capitalism itself \u2013 gain support and policymaker attention;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>enhance the quality of life for many families and workers\u00a0<\/strong>as more flexible-workplace arrangements become permanent and communities adjust to them;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>produce technology enhancements\u00a0<\/strong>in virtual and augmented reality and AI that allow people to live smarter, safer and more productive lives, enabled in many cases by \u201csmart systems\u201d in such key areas as health care, education and community living.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These six themes were commonly expressed by these experts in their responses to a question that asked them to consider the changes that were set in motion in 2020 by the COVID-19 outbreak and describe what the \u201cnew normal\u201d might look like in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Some<strong>\u00a047%<\/strong>\u00a0of these respondents said life will be\u00a0<em>mostly worse<\/em>\u00a0for most people in 2025 than it was before the pandemic, while\u00a0<strong>39%<\/strong>\u00a0said life will be\u00a0<em>mostly better<\/em>\u00a0for most people in 2025 than it was pre-pandemic. These expert views link in interesting ways with public attitudes. A Pew Research\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2020\/09\/17\/about-half-of-americans-say-their-lives-will-remain-changed-in-major-ways-when-the-pandemic-is-over\/\">survey<\/a>\u00a0in August 2020 found that 51% of U.S. adults said they expected their lives to remain changed in major ways even after the pandemic is over.<\/p><div id=\"antig-3230420417\" class=\"antig-content_6 antig-entity-placement\"><a href=\"https:\/\/discoverflow.co\/web\/antigua\" aria-label=\"ANU CVP Digital Broadband 1200x400_1\"><img src=\"https:\/\/mlavawteztbj.i.optimole.com\/w:1201\/h:401\/q:mauto\/f:best\/https:\/\/antiguanewsroom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/ANU-CVP-Digital-Broadband-1200x400_1-1.jpg\" alt=\"\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/mlavawteztbj.i.optimole.com\/w:1201\/h:401\/q:mauto\/f:best\/https:\/\/antiguanewsroom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/ANU-CVP-Digital-Broadband-1200x400_1-1.jpg 1201w, https:\/\/mlavawteztbj.i.optimole.com\/w:300\/h:100\/q:mauto\/f:best\/https:\/\/antiguanewsroom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/ANU-CVP-Digital-Broadband-1200x400_1-1.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mlavawteztbj.i.optimole.com\/w:1024\/h:342\/q:mauto\/f:best\/https:\/\/antiguanewsroom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/ANU-CVP-Digital-Broadband-1200x400_1-1.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/mlavawteztbj.i.optimole.com\/w:768\/h:256\/q:mauto\/f:best\/https:\/\/antiguanewsroom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/ANU-CVP-Digital-Broadband-1200x400_1-1.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px\" width=\"1201\" height=\"401\"   \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>This is a nonscientific canvassing, based on a nonrandom sample. The results represent\u00a0<em>only the opinions of the individuals<\/em>\u00a0who responded to the queries and are not projectable to any other population.<\/p>\n<p>The bulk of this report covers these experts\u2019 written answers explaining their responses. They sounded many broad themes about the ways in which individuals and groups are adjusting in the face of the global crisis, describing the most likely opportunities and challenges emerging as humans accelerate their uses and applications of digital technologies in response. It is important to note that the responses were gathered in the summer of 2020, before the completion of the presidential election in the United States and before COVID-19 vaccines had been approved.<\/p>\n<p>As these experts pondered what was happening in mid-2020 and the likely changes ahead, they used words like \u201cinflection point,\u201d \u201cpunctuated equilibrium,\u201d \u201cunthinkable scale,\u201d \u201cexponential process,\u201d \u201cmassive disruption\u201d and \u201cunprecedented challenge.\u201d They wrote about changes that could reconfigure fundamental realities such as people\u2019s physical \u201cpresence\u201d with others and people\u2019s conceptions of trust and truth.<\/p>\n<p>They wondered, too, if humans can cope effectively with such far-reaching changes, given that they are required to function with \u201cpaleolithic emotions, medieval institutions and god-like technology,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/harvardmagazine.com\/breaking-news\/james-watson-edward-o-wilson-intellectual-entente\">in the words of biologist E.O.
