Director of Education Clare Browne says he’s standing behind a decision to expel two Ottos Comprehensive School students who stabbed a classmate six times.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Browne defended the decision of the ministry after some members of the public took the position that the punishment is unfair.<\/p>\n

The director says schools must be maintained as safe places for children.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>
\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

“When a parent sends his son or daughter to any public school in this country, the parent must be able to go to work and feel that his son or daughter is in a safe environment,” Browne told state media.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

The teens were expelled after the classroom fight which occurred in January.<\/p>\n

Browne said before the decision to expel, the ministry heard from all sides.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

“In the end, it was determined that the student (who did the act), as well as another student that assisted him in the stabbing, were to be expelled and we expelled those two students.”<\/p>\n

In recounting what the ministry saw as the facts of the case, the education official revealed that the rift had been a long-standing one.<\/p>

“Though these two young men were friends, it appears that there were some longstanding issues between them both. The\u00a0very student that was stabbed was stabbed a year ago by the very person who stabbed him six times this time around.”<\/p>
