Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Dr, Rhonda Sealey-Thomas, said the UK variant of the COVID-19 disease had not been detected in Antigua & Barbuda.<\/p>

\u201cFrom since October of 2020, the Caribbean Public Health Agency in a collaboration with the University of the West Indies, they have been looking at our samples to see whether or not we had at that time the UK variant. So far, we have not had that variant discovered in Antigua & Barbuda\u201d, Dr Sealey-Thomas said.<\/p>

The CMO said in addition to the variant discovered in the UK, which is believed to be more transmissible, scientists also discovered variants of the virus in South African and Brazil.<\/p>\n

\u201cGoing forward, what we are going to be doing, we will be picking or selecting, very carefully, samples from the specimens that we have in Antigua & Barbuda and sending those to CARPHA for further investigations to see whether we have either of the three variants in Antigua & Barbuda\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n
