Over time, many who are vaccinated will still get infected with the novel coronavirus.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_43B2D609-9475-C67F-A431-DD2348D4FAEF\">During trials, the vaccines were shown to be about 95% effective \u2014 which means some vaccinated people were still infected.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_6500E9A8-0332-9D24-C53E-DD2348D6019C\">Here&#8217;s how and why:<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_B0D1EFFE-33F8-BD80-F780-DD24779EFA20\">\n<h3>Immunity doesn&#8217;t kick in right away<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__read-all\">\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_AFA5AD67-A813-C874-0E33-DD2440EC80B8\">It takes time for vaccines to build up immunity, and the two authorized coronavirus vaccines both require two doses, given several weeks apart, to train the body&#8217;s immune system. People can be exposed to coronavirus right before being vaccinated, or right after, and there won&#8217;t be time for the body to develop its defenses.<\/div>\n<div class=\"el__embedded el__embedded--standard\">\n<div class=\"el__storyelement--standard el__article--embed\">\n<div class=\"el__article--teaseimage\">\n<div class=\"img__preloader\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_58E3D721-38D0-0689-7196-DD2440ED1182\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_FE121D43-3631-4997-81B8-DD2440EF91AF\">&#8220;That means it&#8217;s possible a person could be infected with the virus that causes Covid-19 just before or just after vaccination and still get sick,&#8221; the CDC says.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_F1EEB92C-F697-8B56-45CB-DD2440F0C6F9\">The 95% efficacy number for the Covid-19 vaccines also assumes some built-in wait time. Moderna measured the efficacy of its vaccine\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/media\/144673\/download\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">starting 14 days<\/a>\u00a0after the second dose, while Pfizer measured it\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/media\/144412\/download\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">starting seven days<\/a>\u00a0after the second dose.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_1F124046-3C8B-636A-A5C2-DD251EE88CB9\">\n<h3>Vaccines might not provide perfect protection<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"el__embedded el__embedded--fullwidth\">\n<div class=\"el__image--fullwidth js__image--fullwidth\">\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"media__image media__image--responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.cnn.com\/cnnnext\/dam\/assets\/210105064121-01-nurses-full-vaccination-coronavirus-exlarge-169.jpg\" alt=\"Nurse Sandra Lindsay received the second dose of a Pfizer vaccine on Monday in New York City. She will not be immediately immune.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_6DF6FD9B-B431-09F0-6CE9-DD25061912C7\">No vaccine is 100% effective, and the makers of coronavirus vaccines are still evaluating whether the shots protect against all infections, or just those that cause symptoms.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_01E89AFE-9E65-A760-41B0-DD2B8E3403FB\">The CDC estimates that 40% of coronavirus infections don&#8217;t cause symptoms, and the trials of both the Moderna and Pfizer\/BioNTech vaccines looked only at whether the vaccines prevented symptomatic infections.<\/div>\n<div data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_01E89AFE-9E65-A760-41B0-DD2B8E3403FB\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_1B3ABB9C-C2A7-3A28-14F7-DD2BA51ED7CA\">Moderna said in December it had submitted data to the US Food and Drug Administration showing its vaccine prevented 2\/3 of all infections, including asymptomatic infections. For now, the CDC recommends that people not assume they are completely immune to infection after having been vaccinated.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_0B08A7ED-BB33-639A-026B-DD3493EA7D05\">Overall, both vaccines provided about 95% protection in clinical trials &#8212; so a small number of people might still catch the virus even after two shots. In wider use, this efficacy rate may go down as people with varying levels of immune system response get vaccinated and then go out into the world.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_7467E38E-7E9B-79CC-ADAA-DD260F31C488\">\n<h3>It&#8217;s not because the vaccine gave you the virus<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_244857D7-B780-576D-E14B-DD2593A394FF\">The current coronavirus vaccines cannot infect anyone with the virus. They don&#8217;t contain the virus.<\/div>\n<div class=\"el__embedded el__embedded--standard\">\n<div class=\"el__storyelement--standard el__article--embed\">\n<div class=\"el__article--teaseimage\">\n<div class=\"img__preloader\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"media__caption el__storyelement__title\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_7EA8B9EE-EEEE-AA65-4610-DD50F75CCF30\">Instead, they carry a small stretch of genetic material known as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/11\/24\/health\/covid-vaccines-design-explained\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">messenger RNA or mRNA<\/a>. It instructs cells in the body to make a small piece of material that looks like a part of the virus. Those bits, in turn, get recognized by the immune system as a foreign invader, and it starts to make antibodies and immune cells that can recognize and neutralize the virus if the vaccinated person ever gets exposed.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_BE4670AB-0B8A-C1C9-869F-DD3CCB33E9F1\">&#8220;None of the authorized and recommended\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/vaccines\/different-vaccines.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">COVID-19 vaccines or COVID-19 vaccines currently in development in the United States<\/a><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>contain the live virus that causes COVID-19. This means that a COVID-19 vaccine cannot make you sick with COVID-19,&#8221;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/vaccines\/facts.html#:~:text=No.,you%20sick%20with%20COVID%2D19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the CDC says<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_191D345E-137F-1536-C7B5-DD28BD5B2C2B\">\n<h3>Immunity may wane over time<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_F11128B2-BC01-4C2E-1653-DD2897E4182B\">No one knows how long the vaccines out now will protect people from infection.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_E24CFE1B-96A2-2116-C3C7-DD513A33EF17\">The novel coronavirus has only been around for about a year, and the final phases of testing the vaccines only wrapped up a few weeks ago. Pfizer and Moderna followed volunteers for at least two months after their second doses.<\/div>\n<div class=\"el__embedded el__embedded--standard\">\n<div class=\"el__storyelement--standard el__article--embed\">\n<div class=\"el__article--teaseimage\">\n<div class=\"img__preloader\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"media__caption el__storyelement__title\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_07751521-758A-D301-143B-DD3E3F37F70A\">Protection provided by vaccines can fade over time, and some vaccines require a booster shot years later. For example, the CDC recommends adults get a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/vpd\/dtap-tdap-td\/public\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tetanus booster shot every 10 years<\/a>. During measles or mumps outbreaks, the CDC says some people &#8220;may be recommended&#8221; to get an additional dose of the MMR vaccine for added protection.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_C0C461E8-5E24-DD32-368E-DD3EA3507901\">There is also the possibility that the novel coronavirus might mutate in a way that makes the vaccines less effective. Influenza virus strains mutate constantly and that&#8217;s one reason people need fresh flu vaccines every year.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_AECA71DD-D496-9B9B-E6F6-DD3F6B0DD919\">Doctors hope coronavirus won&#8217;t mutate like flu does. If that does happen, however, the technology used to make the new coronavirus vaccines is designed to be easily adapted.
