\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Antigua and Barbuda is questioning its categorization by the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as a \u201cLevel 3 \u2013 High Risk\u201d destination from which travellers arriving in the US would have to quarantine.<\/p>

In correspondence to the headquarters of CDC, the US State Department and the Governor of New York State, Andrew Cuomo, Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s Ambassador to the United States, Sir Ronald Sanders, called for an urgent review of the \u201ctrue and verifiable\u201d conditions in the country regarding its control and prevention of COVID-19.<\/p>\n

Ambassador Sanders said that the facts would indicate that, at worst, Antigua and Barbuda should be categorised as a \u201cLevel 1\u2013 Low Risk\u201d destination. He said, more accurately, Antigua and Barbuda \u201cshould be on the list of countries requiring, \u2018No Travel Health Notice\u201d, since the COVID-19 Risk is very low and the country\u2019s performance in preventing and containing the virus is equal to many of the countries, and better than others, that require no travel health cautions\u201d.<\/p>

The CDC travel advisory has included Antigua and Barbuda as \u201chigh-risk\u201d, along with another 200 countries, including Canada, many throughout Europe, and the Caribbean such as The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, BVI, Cayman Islands, Dominican Republic, Guyana, Jamaica, the US Virgin Islands, and Trinidad and Tobago.<\/p>

Sir Ronald argued that \u201cAntigua and Barbuda experienced its first laboratory confirmed case of COVID-19 on March 13, 2020, and since then until today, October 5th<\/sup>\u00a02020, there have been only 3 deaths and 107 confirmed cases\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0He also explained that Antigua and Barbuda has \u201cneither community nor cluster spread, only sporadic cases and its situation is very stable\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cThese conditions\u201d, he said, \u201care verifiable by the Pan-American Health Organization\u201d.<\/p>\n

In his separate letter to New York State Governor, Andrew Cuomo, the veteran diplomat said that he was aware that action was taken based on the CDC travel advisory to regard Antigua and Barbuda as a Level 3 country.\u00a0\u00a0But Sanders called on the Governor to have his own health officials \u201creview the categorization of Antigua and Barbuda which is affecting the people of New York State and Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s without genuine cause\u201d.<\/p>
