Antigua News Room<\/strong><\/a> More than 230 women are living with breast cancer in Antigua and Barbuda.<\/p>

That\u2019s according to Nurse Joycelyn Phillip who works in the Oncology Department at the Mount St. John\u2019s Medical Centre.<\/p>\n

Nurse Phillip, who has worked in the department for 13 years said the number of patients \u201chas risen quite a bit\u201d over the years.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>
\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

\u201cAt present, we have a total of 236 to 240 patients in our department with breast cancer\u201d, she told state media on Thursday, adding, \u201cwe have about 24 new breast cancers for the year to date\u201d.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

While it is recommended that women should start screening at age 40, Phillip advised: \u201cif your family has a history of breast cancer, screening should begin as early as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

She said if a lump is detected during self-examination, people should immediately go to their doctor to make sure it is not malignant.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Speaking about current patients, the nurse revealed \u201cwe have as low as 28. So the age range is from 28 to 76 with the majority within the 40 to 50, 65 age group.<\/p>\n

October is being observed as Breast Cancer Awareness month.<\/p>
