It is with a profoundly heavy heart that\u00a0IAS \u2013\u00a0the International AIDS Society\u00a0\u2013\u00a0today mourns the passing of\u00a0Timothy Ray\u00a0Brown<\/strong>, the first person\u00a0to be\u00a0cured\u00a0of HIV.<\/p>\n

Known as the\u00a0\u201cBerlin Patient\u201d, Timothy was\u00a0cured of HIV in 2008 after undergoing a complex\u00a0stem cell transplant for\u00a0lymphoma.\u00a0For the past six months,\u00a0Timothy\u00a0had been living with a recurrence of the\u00a0leukaemia\u00a0that had entered his spine and brain. He had remained HIV free.<\/p>

\"\"<\/div>\n

\u201cOn behalf of\u00a0all\u00a0its members\u00a0and the Governing Council, the IAS sends its condolences\u00a0to Timothy\u2019s partner,\u00a0Tim,\u00a0and\u00a0his\u00a0family and friends,\u201d\u00a0Adeeba\u00a0Kamarulzaman<\/strong>, President of the IAS and\u00a0Professor of Medicine and Infectious Diseases at the University of Malaya,\u00a0said.<\/p>

\u201cWe owe Timothy and his\u00a0doctor,\u00a0Gero H\u00fctter,\u00a0a\u00a0great\u00a0deal of\u00a0gratitude for opening the door for\u00a0scientists to explore\u00a0the\u00a0concept that a cure for HIV\u00a0is\u00a0possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Timothy, living with HIV and\u00a0with acute myeloid leukaemia, received a bone marrow transplant\u00a0in Berlin, Germany, in 2007. The\u00a0donor was naturally resistant to HIV infection because of a mutation in the CCR5 gene, a critical protein required by HIV to enter and infect cells.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Timothy\u00a0stopped\u00a0antiretroviral therapy (ART)\u00a0very soon after\u00a0the\u00a0transplant\u00a0and he remained\u00a0free of\u00a0any\u00a0detectable virus. In other words, he\u00a0was cured.\u00a0His\u00a0experience suggested that HIV might one day be curable. This\u00a0fuelled\u00a0a range of\u00a0efforts by researchers and institutions\u00a0focusing\u00a0on HIV cure research.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

One such effort is the IAS\u00a0Towards an HIV Cure\u00a0initiative,\u00a0established in 2011\u00a0to promote and facilitate the search for a safe and affordable cure that can be scaled up.\u00a0Professor\u00a0Sharon Lewin<\/strong>, President-Elect of the IAS\u00a0and\u00a0Director of the Doherty Institute\u00a0in Melbourne, Australia,\u00a0co-chairs this IAS\u00a0initiative\u00a0with\u00a0Mark\u00a0Dybul<\/strong>,\u00a0a former Executive Director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria and US Global AIDS Coordinator.\u00a0Steven Deeks<\/strong>, Professor of Medicine in Residence at the University of California is the Chief Scientific Advisor of the Towards an HIV Cure Advisory Board.<\/p>

A full decade after Timothy\u2019s cure,\u00a0Adam Castillejo<\/strong>,\u00a0who had also been living with HIV,\u00a0reportedly\u00a0remained in HIV remission off ART, 19 months after receiving a bone marrow transplant\u00a0for Hodgkin\u2019s lymphoma\u00a0from a CCR5-negative donor.\u00a0Now known as\u00a0the\u00a0\u201cLondon Patient\u201d,\u00a0he remains\u00a0in remission and\u00a0is widely considered to\u00a0be the second\u00a0man\u00a0cured of HIV.<\/p>

\u201cAlthough\u00a0the cases of Timothy and\u00a0Adam\u00a0are\u00a0not a viable large-scale strategy for a cure,\u00a0they\u00a0do represent a critical moment in the search for an HIV cure,\u201d\u00a0Sharon Lewin<\/strong>\u00a0said.<\/p>\n

\u201cTimothy\u00a0was a champion\u00a0and\u00a0advocate\u00a0for keeping\u00a0an HIV\u00a0cure\u00a0on the political\u00a0and scientific\u00a0agenda.\u00a0It is\u00a0the\u00a0hope\u00a0of the scientific\u00a0community that\u00a0one\u00a0day we can\u00a0honour his legacy\u00a0with a\u00a0safe, cost-effective and\u00a0widely accessible\u00a0strategy to achieve\u00a0HIV remission and cure\u00a0using gene\u00a0editing\u00a0or techniques\u00a0that boost immune control.\u201d<\/p>\n

In\u00a0late August,\u00a0it was\u00a0reported\u00a0that\u00a0Loreen Willenberg<\/strong>,\u00a0a\u00a0woman\u00a0who had been living with HIV\u00a0since 1992,\u00a0had no traces\u00a0of\u00a0intact\u00a0HIV despite\u00a0not using ART.\u00a0She\u00a0may be the first person cured of\u00a0HIV\u00a0without\u00a0undergoing\u00a0a risky bone\u00a0marrow transplant.\u00a0Researchers\u00a0believe that she may be an \u201cextreme elite controller\u201d, where only fragments of HIV remain and these fragments are unable to replicate.<\/p>\n
