The support offered by Dogs and Cats of Antigua to rescue stray animals has been enhanced with the building of a\u00a0brand new\u00a0cattery by the Sandals Foundation.<\/p>

Since 2015, the foster based animal foundation has provided a safe space for 2,400 stray dogs and cats to be housed after rescue, spayed, neutered and rehomed through adoptions locally as well as in Canada and the United States of America.<\/p>\n

Now, the team of animal advocates\u00a0is\u00a0one step closer to operating\u00a0a\u00a0full-fledged\u00a0clinic, following\u00a0the construction of a fenced cattery costing some USD $6000.<\/p>

 <\/p>\n

Founder and\u00a0Executive Director\u00a0of Dogs and Cats\u00a0of Antigua, Joy Farrell\u00a0says the new cattery will allow the\u00a0team to implement a strategic spay\u00a0and neuter\u00a0programme\u00a0across the island.\u00a0\u201cLast year we spent a lot of time trapping and picking up cats to be spayed and neutered but we desperately needed a place to keep the cats before and after surgery. We had to abandon the process because there was no place for the cats to be secured.\u201d\u00a0This new cattery,\u00a0Farrell\u00a0says, \u201cnow gives us a safe space to secure the animals.\u201d<\/p>

Heidi Clarke, Executive Director at the Sandals Foundation\u00a0says the philanthropic organisation was happy to assist.\u00a0\u201cA healthy community is also measured by the health and living condition of its animals. Cats and dogs have been traditionally held as pets for many families, but unfortunately there are many that are without a home. We were happy to help the amazing work being done by the team at Dogs and Cats of Antigua to rescue, care for and rehome our feline friends.\u201d\u00a0 Clarke said.<\/p>\n

General Manager at Sandals Grande Antigua Resort & Spa Matthew Cornall recently toured the facility and is impressed with the progress of the\u00a0development.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cWe are pleased to know that the assistance provided by the Sandals Foundation will significantly aid Dogs and Cats of Antigua in addressing the issue of these types of stray animals,\u201d Cornall says.<\/p>

The animal clinic and foundation\u00a0is\u00a0operated solely on donations and boasts a strong network of supporters in the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada.\u00a0\u00a0Farrell said, “We are very grateful to the Sandals Foundation for their financial assistance in building this cattery. The clinic and cattery\u00a0is\u00a0phase one of the development of our Sanctuary. It\u2019s only through a strategic and effective spay neuter\u00a0programme\u00a0that we can make a dent\u00a0in\u00a0Antigua\u2019s\u00a0stray population”.<\/p>\n
