\u00a0Caribbean American legislators have expressed sadness over the passing of United States Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.<\/strong><\/p>

Ginsburg, the second woman to serve on the highest court in America and pioneering advocate for women\u2019s rights, died at her home in Washington on Friday. She was 87.<\/p>\n

The US Supreme Court announced that she died from complications of metastatic pancreatic cancer.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>
\"\"<\/div>\n

\u201cThe country has lost a brilliant mind, a fearless fighter, a diligent public servant who spent her life dedicated to protecting and advancing the rights of the vulnerable,\u201d New York City Public Advocate Jumaane D. Williams, the son of Grenadian immigrants, told the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) Friday night.\u00a0\u201cJustice Ruth Bader Ginsburg\u2019s legacy as a jurist was incredible \u2013 inspiring, progressive and just.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

\u201cHer impact on the court was tremendous in scope and in value as we strive for an America that lives up to its promise,\u201d he added. \u201cHer resilience seemed unmatchable as she worked to fulfill that promise.<\/p>\n

\u201cHer passing in this time, in this moment of history, is an unfathomable loss, which will reverberate with the volume of her legacy, her volumes of work, for many years to come,\u201d Williams continued. \u201cNo matter who the next president nominates to the court, Justice Ginsburg is, and always will be, irreplaceable.\u201d<\/p>

New York State Assemblywoman Rodneyse Bichotte, the daughter of Haitian immigrants, said the nation lost \u201ca pre eminent judicial scholar and champion for gender equality.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bichotte, the chair of the Brooklyn Democratic Party, noted that Ginsburg, a Brooklyn, New York native, passed away on the evening of Rosh Hashanah, a Jewish holiday.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

She said Ginsburg started her legal career as an advocate for\u00a0gender equality and that Ginsburg\u2019s \u201clegal opinions and powerful voice on the country\u2019s highest court made her a role model to women across the nation and globe.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Bichotte, who represents the predominantly Caribbean 42nd\u00a0Assembly District in Brooklyn, said Justice Ginsburg\u2019s example compelled\u00a0her to pursue her Juris Doctorate, a law degree, at Brooklyn Law School.<\/p>\n

\u201cJustice Ginsburg\u2019s contributions to the court will be sorely missed,\u201d she said. \u201cHer leadership, her wisdom and her brave fight against the illness that eventually took her life should inspire not only the country in the days and years ahead but the nation, as it confronts extraordinary challenges.<\/p>\n

\u201cJustice Ginsburg\u2019s legacy must be carried on by the next justice to serve on the court,\u201d Bichotte urged.<\/p>\n

New York City Councilman Dr. Mathieu Eugene, the first Haitian to be elected to New York City Council, said: \u201cIt is with great sadness that our country mourns the passing of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.<\/p>\n

\u201cJustice Ginsburg was a monumental figure in the fight for the women\u2019s rights, and was a role model for the current and future generation of leaders,\u201d said Dr. Eugene, who represents the 40th\u00a0Council District in Brooklyn.<\/p>\n

US Democratic Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, who represents the Caribbean community in parts of Brooklyn and Queens in New York, said \u201cour nation mourns the loss of a brilliant jurist, trailblazer for equality and fearless advocate for gender, racial and social justice.<\/p>\n

\u201cJustice Ginsburg\u2019s native Brooklyn mourns the loss of its favorite daughter, whose grit and courage have forever left their mark on America,\u201d said Jeffries, chairman of the US House of Representatives\u2019 Democratic Caucus. \u201cJustice Ginsburg occupies a singular place in history for her life\u2019s work defending our Constitution and ensuring our laws meet the promise and values of our great nation.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe used her voice time and again to defend the Constitution and uphold our democracy for all Americans, especially the least, the lost and the left behind among us,\u201d added Jeffries, representative for the 8th\u00a0Congressional District, which includes parts of Brooklyn and Queens.<\/p>\n

Many political analysts now fear that incumbent President Donald J. Trump will appoint, and the Republican-controlled US Senate will confirm, an ultra-right conservative justice to the highest court in America, drastically tilting the balance on the US Supreme Court squarely in Republicans\u2019 favour.<\/p>\n

Within hours of Justice Ginsberg\u2019s death, US Senate Republican Majority Leader Mitch McConnell vowed to put Trump\u2019s nominee to replace\u00a0\u00a0Ginsburg\u00a0on the US Supreme Court.<\/p>\n
