Minister responsible for Festivals, the Hon. Daryll Matthew today announced that Cabinet has approved a scaled down schedule of events for the country\u2019s celebration of its 39th<\/sup>\u00a0Anniversary of Political Independence.<\/p>

\n

Minister Matthew said that the events running from Sunday 25th<\/sup>\u00a0October to Monday 2nd<\/sup>\u00a0November will feature the Independence Thanksgiving Service, National Heroes Day ceremony, Golden Age events, National Dress Day, a virtual Independence Calypso Competition, the Ceremonial Parade and Honors Ceremony and Barbuda Day activities.<\/p>\n

\n

He noted that the new addition to the schedule, the Independence Calypso Competition, will be held at the Dean William Lake Cultural Centre on Saturday 21st<\/sup>\u00a0October and will be in the form of a virtual competition.\u00a0 He said that calypsonians will be required to sing one new patriotic\/ song of thanksgiving during the competition to win the main prize.\u00a0 Registration is now open at the Festivals Office on Redcliffe Street for interested artistes.<\/p>\n

\n

The Festivals Minister further outlined that the scaling down of the events is due to the country\u2019s fight against the spread of the Coronavirus.\u00a0 It was pointed out that the Ceremonial Parade and the National Heroes Day Ceremony will be TV\/Radio events with limited audience.\u00a0 \u201cWe will be strictly adhering to the protocols established to combat COVID-19,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The theme for the events will be announced later this week.<\/p>
