Celebrate! Recognizing a steady four-year development that has resulted in a first-class lending library, the Mary E. Pigott Primary School has been awarded the 2017-2018 Hands Literacy Award for Antigua. The prize is USD $1,000 retail value in new books or literacy resources of the school\u2019s choice.<\/p>\n

Deputy Principal Anthea Anthony has been a leading light in the library\u2019s progress, along with colleagues Ms. Teague, Mrs. Severin, and Ms. Thwaites, and together they worked with Lisa Tomlinson, the Hands Literacy Link for Antigua, to create the school\u2019s first-ever lending library. Generous, multiyear funding for the project was supplied by the Scotiabank Community Program.<\/p>

Mr. Archer added that the donation shows Scotiabank\u2019s continued commitment to Antiguan youth and the community.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt Hands Across the Sea our mission is to give every child on Antigua access to a lending library of new, exciting, age-appropriate and culturally relevant reading material,\u201d says Harriet Linskey, Executive Director of Hands Across the Sea. \u201cThanks to Scotiabank\u2019sCommunity Program, we have sent 1,176 brand new, top-quality books and six sets of metal bookshelves to Mary E. Pigott Primary School, and assisted with purchasing floor tiles, thinset, and grout for the library space. We also thank Principal Christopher Roberts, Deputy Principal Anthea Anthony, former principal Ms. Gayle Samuel, members of the community who volunteered their time and effort to the library, and Karen Brown-Francis of the Antigua Ministry of Education for being such wonderful partners in education.\u201d<\/p>
