Hoteliers say short-term bookings\u00a0are trickling, and\u00a0concerns about an increase in COVID-19 cases in\u00a0Jamaica are triggering cancellations.<\/p>

Jamaica recorded another death from COVID-19 in the past day\u00a0and saw another dramatic uptick in positive cases. There are now 20 fatalities from the disease, and 102 new cases yesterday\u00a0brought the total infections recorded since March 10 to\u00a02,113.<\/p>\n

The arrival of COVID-19 in Jamaica, nearly six months ago, and the consequent shuttering of the tourism and entertainment industries, have resulted in sharp declines for tourism, although there has been a gradual build-up since the\u00a0reopening of the borders in July.<\/p>

The latest arrival figures for July 2020\u00a0point to an alarming\u00a0but expected decline of 84.5 per cent\u00a0over the corresponding\u00a0period last year, with only 41,941 arrivals on the island, down from 281,115 stopover arrivals\u00a0up to December last year.<\/p>

\u201cThe revitalisation of travel to Kingston continues to be a challenge, and most properties in the city are currently operating at about 10 to 15 per cent\u00a0occupancy levels\u201d, Chris Jarrett, president of the Kingston chapter of the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association,\u00a0told The\u00a0Gleaner.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd we just lost a booking for 93 room nights in\u00a0Montego\u00a0Bay this week due to the\u00a0COVID-19\u00a0spike following on nomination day and election campaigning. But generally,\u00a0Montego\u00a0Bay is performing much better than Kingston,\u201d\u00a0he added.<\/p>

JTB responding\u00a0to fallout<\/h2>\n

In response, the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) and its branches\u00a0in the United States, Canada and Latin America\u00a0have been working to build and sustain travel, when it becomes possible, and to amplify brand awareness\u00a0for\u00a0Jamaica throughout the pandemic.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce we received word that Jamaica was closing her borders and travel would come to a halt,\u00a0we immediately devised a plan to keep the brand alive with our travel agents, tour operators and our airline partners, and we continue our efforts daily, depending on prevailing\u00a0conditions,\u201d\u00a0Donnie Dawson, deputy director of tourism for the Americas, told The\u00a0Gleaner.<\/p>

<\/div>\n

\u201cIt is important for us to maintain our strong travel trade relationships and keep Jamaica top of mind during the pandemic,\u201d\u00a0Dawson added.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Jamaica maintains relationships with more than\u00a040,000 high-yielding travel agents across the United States\u00a0and Canada, and the JTB said engagement with them began immediately following the downturn\u00a0in Jamaica. It said first it provided information on Jamaica to help determine if travel clients should reschedule, cancel or seek refunds. The next step\u00a0was to engage thousands of agents in new\u00a0ways to keep the brand alive and exciting.<\/p>\n

Further, it noted that in the absence of in-person visits to travel agencies, service calls became telemarketing wellness calls;\u00a0trade seminars morphed into online training workshops; and what would have normally been \u2018thank you\u2019 functions for the trade\u00a0turned into \u201clively chit-chat Zoom\u00a0calls\u201d. the JTB said.<\/p>\n

Monthly webinars are also now conducted biweekly;\u00a0monthly\u00a0eNewsletters\u00a0produced and issued weekly to\u00a0increase\u00a0connectivity;\u00a0 and social media platforms, such as\u00a0Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn, have\u00a0now become an even more important part of the communication and marketing strategy\u00a0to\u00a0reach almost 40,000 people weekly, along with amplified email blasts.<\/p>\n

Additionally, the\u00a0JTB\u00a0explained that it has used an elaborate and exciting audiovisual musical journey to\u00a0chronicle\u00a0the development of Jamaican music: mento, ska, rocksteady and reggae,\u00a0to use as a cultural magnet. Competitions have also been mounted\u00a0across key markets to place focus on Jamaica.\u00a0These include the \u2018Treasure Hunt Trivia\u2019 series and the \u2018Picture Me in Jamaica\u2019 photo contest. On\u00a0Travel Agent Day several weeks ago, the\u00a0JTB\u00a0partnered with Grace Foods in the USA to create a \u2018Jamaica Quiz Challenge\u2019 in which successful participants won Grace food baskets loaded with Jamaican treats.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur activities have increased greatly during the\u00a0COVID-19\u00a0pandemic, and in fact, we\u2019ve never been busier, and our team continues to be the industry leader creating a kaleidoscope of activit[ies]\u201d, Phillip Rose,\u00a0JTB\u2019s\u00a0regional director for the Northeast, said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe global market has a big appetite for Jamaica and we continue to answer the call despite unprecedented times,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
