The Department of Environment on behalf of the Government of Antigua and Barbuda showcased its climate change mitigation projects and programmes at its Fourth National Communication Mitigation Workshop. The workshop was held on Friday August 14, 2020 and targeted representatives from the agriculture, forestry, land use, energy, industry and waste sectors.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

The aim of the workshop was to inform participants about the department\u2019s mitigation actions that will be featured in the country\u2019s National Communications. This report is prepared to detail how each Party to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) implements the Convention (4NC).<\/p>\n

The workshop was organized as part of the department\u2019s Fourth National Communication Project , which is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and implemented by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). This workshop was held both in person at the Department of Environment headquarters and via virtual platforms in order to ensure physical distancing and to follow Covid-19 protocols.<\/p>

 <\/p>\n

The projects and programmes, as well as those in development are each designed to meet national strategic priorities of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere, and support the country as it transitions to low emissions technologies and practices.<\/p>

 <\/p>\n

\u201cThe workshop featured robust discussion that was used to evaluate the level of stakeholder interest for climate change action and investment in renewable energy technologies,\u201d said Project Coordinator of the Fourth National Communications Project, Christa-Joy Burton.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It highlighted climate change research and assessments and included local, regional, and international participants working within for public and private sector entities. These stakeholders provided valuable feedback on the mitigation actions. During the sessions, presentations were made by international partner agencies: Climate Analytics (CA), International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) along with the Department of Environment Project Coordinators. These presentations covered a number of topics, including Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s Backup Energy Sector, the National Greenhouse Gas Reduction Report, the draft Energy Roadmap for Antigua and Barbuda and on the importance of Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) Systems.<\/p>

 <\/p>\n

As a Party to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, Antigua and Barbuda submits National Communications every five \u2013 10 years. The report also provides an update of mitigation actions implemented through national programmes and projects and introduced to combat climate change. The National Communications indicates how these actions will be accelerated and the investments necessary for sustainable development and to reduce the country\u2019s carbon footprint.<\/p>\n
