An invitation has been extended to US President Donald Trump to visit Haiti in the aftermath of reports that he made a derogatory comment about the French speaking Caribbean Community (CARICOM)\u00a0member state.<\/p>

The invitation came from Haiti\u2019s ambassador to the US, Paul Altidor, who was speaking with CNN on Monday.<\/p>\n

According to Altidor, the words reportedly said by the president were\u00a0an insult to Haiti\u2019s dignity.<\/p>

\u201cThe words, they did hurt the community, they did hurt the country of Haiti\u2026..it hurt because one, it\u2019s an insult to our dignity but more importantly it\u2019s because too much of Haiti is misunderstood,\u201d said Altidor.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

The Haitian ambassador, in issuing the invitation said it \u201cdoesn\u2019t excuse an apology for what was said\u201d and that \u201csuch words shouldn\u2019t be coming out of anybody\u2019s mouth, let alone the President of the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n

During a meeting with lawmakers here last week, the President reportedly made the comment about immigration for Haiti, El Salvador and African nations.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

However, Trump later tweeted that he \u201cnever said anything derogatory about Haitians, other than Haiti is, obviously a very poor and troubled country.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister of St. Lucia, Allen Chastanet has also weighed in on the issue.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Chastanet told reporters in St. Lucia on Monday that Trump\u2019s statements were \u2018very unfortunate\u2019.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

He expressed the view that CARICOM had issued an appropriate response.<\/p>\n

\u2018If anything, I think that maybe the African Union\u2019s response which asked for\u00a0 an apology would have been appropriate,\u2019 Chastanet declared.<\/p>\n

\u2018I think there are two sides to take, one obviously from an international perspective that it\u2019s just insulting and particularly when you think of what Haitians and Haiti have gone through and the need for our assistance,\u2019 he observed.<\/p>\n

According to Chastanet, Haitians are still trying to recover from a devastating earthquake and hurricane Matthew one year ago.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf anything, they need our sympathy not that level of criticism,\u2019 Chastanet told reporters.<\/p>\n

He explained that the world is becoming very unsympathetic.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to know that we need to get our own act together and we have to do more in order to progress our own development plans and make sure that we are viable countries,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
