T<\/span>he first British tourists to visit Antigua since the pandemic began will arrive on the island on Saturday\u00a0\u2013 and could be on the beach within 70 minutes of landing, the head of the its tourist board has said.<\/p>

Colin James, CEO of the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority, said the island has had since the beginning of June to finely tune its arrival screening process\u00a0\u2013\u00a0it was one of the first countries in the region to reopen its borders\u00a0\u2013 and that the \u201clong waiting times\u201d warned by the UK Foreign Office should not materialise.<\/p>\n

All visitors are required to present evidence of a negative coronavirus test taken no more than seven days before departure, but some arrivals may require additional testing.<\/p>

James said a travel agent friend had arrived on the island at 2.05pm and was on the beach by 3.15pm.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

On Saturday, the first flight from the UK to the Caribbean island will arrive from London Gatwick. Operated by British Airways, it is fully booked.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have opened to a few destinations in the US,\u201d said James, \u201cbut none of their flights have come full. BA is the first full one. Full in and full out.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Tourism accounts for nearly 60 per cent of the island\u2019s GDP, but\u00a0Antigua<\/a>\u00a0has not rushed its return to the holiday market.<\/p>\n

A state of emergency is due to expire on Friday but will likely be extended until October, enshrining in law a number of measures intended to stem the spread of coronavirus. To date, Antigua has recorded 91 cases and three deaths.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Rules include the mandatory wearing of face masks in public places, a curfew between 11pm and 5am and restrictions on parties and social gatherings. But James said the island has retained its relaxed way of life.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re still light-hearted,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have adapted to what is required but will still have not lost our Caribbean charm and passion.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said holidays will be \u201cvery similar\u201d to before, but will need to follow Antigua\u2019s protocols.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy and large, you can enjoy your resort,\u201d he said. \u201cIf you are around the pool, just by yourself or with your family, you don\u2019t have to wear your masks, but if you are interacting with staff or other guests we ask that you do.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can still safely enjoy your holiday and have a great time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Antigua\u2019s 365 beaches mean holidaymakers will have no difficulty finding their own space, said James.<\/p>\n

He added that there is \u201cpent-up demand\u201d for holidays but does not expect a return to pre-pandemic levels until at the end of 2021.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen the tap got turned off in February\/March, we were on our way to having a phenomenal year,\u201d he said, \u201cNow, with the tap being turned back on, it is starting as a trickle, but as demand builds, we are seeing numbers rise.<\/p>\n

\u201cRestarting is an achievement. The booking are coming, but they\u2019re largely coming in for 2021. But the Caribbean has always been very resilient, we know how to get back to business.\u201d<\/p>\n
