Barbuda Member of Parliament Trevor Walker has responded to allegations that the Barbuda Council abandoned beds donated to the sister isle.<\/p>

\u201cI am extremely disappointed with Philmore Mullins, the Director of NODS, and more so, the Prime Minister, Gaston Browne, for putting this out there as if it\u2019s a situation where the Barbuda Council should be blamed for what I saw on social media,\u201d Walker said on Thursday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe reached out to NODs, because we wanted to see what those items were so that we could get them to Barbuda and store them properly,\u201d Walker explained.<\/p>

<\/div>\n

\u201cNODS refused to send these things to Barbuda \u2026 and we don\u2019t believe that NODS stored these things properly.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

He said the items were finally shipped to Barbuda on July 2, without any form of covering or protection from the elements while on the barge.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

\u201cWhen those things reached Barbuda they were in a deplorable condition. Terrible. Wheels broken, rusting, the electrical parts of these things totally damaged. So, NODS, whatever they did for two years, had them dusted, rusting, rats eat off the electricals, all sorts of problems,\u201d Walker said.<\/p>

\u201cOut of the 10 beds, two were completely not working, cannot be used so we are left with eight beds \u2026 all of them had issues. He [the technician] had to install new electricals, new wires, new ends for the plugs to get them to work,\u201d Walker said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe decided we\u2019re going to fix them up because we\u2019re very grateful to donors who have contributed to the cause of Barbuda after Hurricane Irma.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/p>\n

The items that were salvageable have been stored away and are now operable, Walker said. The pictures circulating on social media are of the two beds which were beyond repair.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

\u201cSo it was very unfortunate that this thing was hyped up in a particular way. Everything to make the Barbuda Council look bad, perpetuated by a prime minister, in my view, that has no clue about anything in Barbuda and it\u2019s very, very unfortunate,\u201d Walker said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just want to take this opportunity to again thank the British High Commissioner and all those donors who donated to Barbuda two years ago and just to let them know it\u2019s just on the 2nd of July [that] we have seen what the donation is and we\u2019re grateful.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat NODs and the Prime Minister should do, and I\u2019m asking for it again, is to produce an audited statement of all the donations received \u2014 money, goods and otherwise \u2014 for Barbuda to the public.<\/p>\n

\u201cUp to now, as transparent as this administration says they are, we have not received an audited statement from the Prime Minister, from the Government, from NODS, concerning what they\u2019ve donated to Barbuda. And I find it very ironic that they\u2019re going to use a situation like this to make us look bad when they themselves are not transparent,\u201d Walker added.<\/p>\n
